A search is on for ladies with beauty and brains to compete in the 2010 Miss Trinidad and Tobago World Pageant.

The prestigious event is scheduled for early July in which a bevy of beauties will via for the title to determine who will represent Trinidad in the 2010 Miss World Pageant.

Ashanna Arthur is the reigning queen who was also said to have been the crowd’s favourite at last year’s pageant, while Chenelle Maloney was adjudged First Runner-up and Danielle Tardieu Moze took the Second Runner-up position.
In November, Miss T&T World will be representing Trinidad and Tobago in the 60th annual Miss World Pageant which was first held in 1951 and organised by Eric Morley. It was originally called The Festival Bikini Contest in honor of the recently introduced Swimwear of the day.

The franchise is now chaired by his widow Julia, who has successfully turned the annual spectacle into the most anticipated and most watched televised broadcast, with over two billion viewers in 180 countries and territories.

Over the years, T&T has produced multiple top 15 finalists, most recently Gabrielle Walcott in 2008, and won its only title in 1986 when Giselle Marie La Ronde represented that country.

The committee will also be seeking male contestants to represent Trinidad and Tobago for the first time ever in the 2011 Mr. World Pageant to be held in Korea.

Caribbean Supermodels rocks New York City at "Caribbean Fashion Rocks"

NEW YORK, NY (Ms. RAINE INC): Caribbean Fashion Rocks!, New York's signature runway for island designers and models, will be rocked this spring by three of the world's foremost Caribbean-born fashion models-Jaunel McKenzie, Carla Campbell, and Oraine Barrett. All hailing from the famed Pulse Model Agency in Jamaica, the super models, along with Pulse Chairman and CEO, fashion industry luminary Kingsley Cooper, will be guests of honor at Fashion Rocks' 3rd annual staging at LQ New York in New York City on Sunday, April 25th.

Since its inception in 2007, Caribbean Fashion Rocks! has provided a unique platform for Caribbean designers and models to penetrate New York's renowned fashion industry. For the 2010 staging, Fashion Rocks will turn its focus to the region's burgeoning modeling industry, honoring Cooper for his pioneering role in developing an international modeling industry in the Caribbean, and producing the fashion industry's groundbreaking Caribbean supermodels.

Jaunel McKenzie is the first Caribbean-born model in history to be ranked the #1 black model in the world by Models.com. The Jamaican-born model was discovered by Pulse at the age of 16 during their very first Caribbean model search in 2002. McKenzie has built an enviable portfolio, with multiple spreads in Vogue - 11 for American Vogue and one each for the German, French, and Italian editions. She has also done spreads for Elle, W, Vibe, Allure, and Victoria Secret. McKenzie has starred in campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, and Addidas, and has walked the runway for Kenneth Cole, Catherine Malandrino, Derek Lam, Heatherette, Gucci, Dolce & Gabana, Louis Vuitton, and Stella McCartney, to name a few.

In 2006, Pulse model Carla Campbell was featured in the highly coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, becoming the very first Caribbean-born model, and one of a select handful of black models to grace its pages. Also hailing from Jamaica, Campbell is also the second Caribbean model to hit the pages of Victoria Secret. Campbell has done editorials in Essence, French Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Maxim, and has been featured on the cover of Esquire Magazine. L'oreal, Nike, Avon, Eckored, and Footlocker are among her featured campaigns.

After escaping a brutal attack which left him seriously disfigured, Oraine Barrett has overcome hurdles and broken barriers to follow in the footsteps of iconic model Tyson Beckford, being the second Jamaican model to star in a high-profile campaign for timeless American brand Polo by Ralph Lauren. Barrett has also been featured in campaigns by Abercrombie & Fitch, John Bartlett, Phat Farm, Liz Claiborne, and Pepe Jeans, and has done editorials for Sports and Style Magazine and Japanese Vogue.

"When most people think of fashion capitals, they think Paris, Milan, or New York City - not the Caribbean," states Robert Clarke, CEO of Irie Jam Media Group, New York's leading outlet for everything Caribbean, producers of Caribbean Fashion Rocks! "The Caribbean region has produced some of the world's greatest supermodels - Jaunel, Carla, Oraine, Tyson-even Naomi Campbell has Caribbean roots. It is an honor to have Jaunel, Carla, and Oraine walk the Fashion Rocks runway. And an honor to recognize Kingsley Cooper and Pulse, they represent the best of the best in the Caribbean fashion industry, and demonstrate how influential our industry is globally."

McKenzie, Campbell, and Barrett will be joining some of New York's prominent and upcoming models on the Caribbean Fashion Rocks! runway this April, wearing designs from local fashion lines including Michael Gillings, Jewel Shannon, Kay Dane, Rep JA, and Royal Rush, among others.

Vybz Kartel and Mavado "Peace Concert" Cancelled

Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Friday, March 26, 2010 | 12:43 PM

Friday, March 26, 2010

After weeks of intense lobbying by promoters and meetings between the various stakeholders attempting to bring a message of unity to disenfranchised youth, the Barbados government has stood firm on its position to cancel the Peace Concert featuring dancehall acts Vybz Kartel and Mavado which would have been held on March 27th in the island.
Prime Minister David Thompson made the announcement at a press conference held yesterday, exactly two days before the event. Thompson is quoted in the Barbados Advocate as saying: "That quest to do the right thing by Barbadians prompted my request for the meeting with the organisers of the proposed show and I am happy to announce that in deference to the expressed wishes and the anxieties of a very wide cross-section of Barbadians, that the organisers of the Mavado/Vybz Kartel show and Youth Forum have agreed to the revamping of initiatives resulting in the cancellation of this weekend's activities.

It was only recently that Vybz Kartel and his lyrical rival Mavado made a pact to keep the peace and end the ‘Gully-Gaza’ feud, which had been brewing between them for some time now. The feud had spilled into the streets of Jamaica fuelling school violence on the island and also had a bit of an impact here.

Ky-Mani Marley Defends Controversial Book

The son of reggae legend BOB MARLEY has defended his decision to publish a controversial book about his late father.

Ky-Mani Marley tried to delay the release of Dear Dad: Where's the Family In Our Family, Today? after realising it could upset his relatives, but the tome hit shelves last month (Feb10), to mark what would have been his father's 65th birthday.

The book's cover boasts it contains the "story the Marley family apparently didn't want you to know".

But Marley took issue with his publishing firm over the claim and on Tuesday (16Feb10), his editor Farrah Gray agreed to pull the tagline from the book's second edition.

And Marley has now spoken out about the controversy surrounding the expose.

In a post on his MySpace page, he writes, "The book was not an attack on my family. I love my brothers and sisters more than anyone can know."

No Phear releases new album "I Stand Alone"

I Stand AloneNo Phear recently released his new album, marking a huge stage in the career of the versatile reggae/hip hop singer-songwriter. No Phear, who hails from St. Ann, Jamaica, has released his second solo project and is now promoting the album to build upon his fan base and introduce his music to more people than ever.

The album, I Stand Alone, consists of sixteen original songs from No Phear, each providing a combination of contemporary driving beats, resonant vocals and inspired lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears testament to a modern interpretation of reggae, and the music is accentuated throughout with elements of dancehall and hip hop.

The album was recorded at Rockstar Entertainment & Music in New Jersey, and its creation was supported by musicians like Pink Bling, Super Shane and Notorious. It was produced collaboratively by No Phear, Showtime da Producer and T and was post-produced by T from High Stakes Records.

I Stand Alone reveals the array of influences that have found their way into No Phear’s music. While his grounding is in traditional reggae, his style has been shaped by other musical forms indigenous to the Caribbean. No Phear always brings something singular and fresh to a traditional sound. For this reason, his preference for unconventional beats has been enhanced by his ability to blend the essence of reggae/dancehall with a modern urban note flavored by rap and hip hop.

No Phear said of his work, “Since going solo, my style has developed, and I’ve incorporated other sounds and genres which have all made their way into I Stand Alone. The album is a reflection of my influences over the years and the changes that I’ve experienced as an artist.”

The album is available now on iTunes, Rhapsody, napster and Amazon; and fans are encouraged to visit No Phear’s website, which provides everything you could want to know about the promising musician: fans can check out No Phear’s brand new “Zion’s Gate” video, view photos, and sign up for the mailing list to receive information about upcoming shows and No Phear news. Fans are also invited to visit No Phear’s MySpace page and join up to be his friend on Facebook.

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh to be honored

Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Monday, March 8, 2010 | 12:38 PM

Monday, March 8, 2010

Jamaicans will honour late reggae greats BOB MARLEY and PETER TOSH when the doors to the nation's music museum open next year (11).

Rare pieces of memorabilia will go on display at the Jamaica Music Museum, which will document and preserve artifacts from the Caribbean country's rich music history.

Items to be exhibited include the album Marley produced before he became famous - Martha Velez's Escape from Babylon - as well as a cassette tape that features Tosh performing a blues track with Rolling Stones stars Keith Richards and Sir Mick Jagger in 1977.

The country's preservationists took a hit after historic film footage and thousands of original records were stolen from a collection of archives in Kingston during a raid in January 2008.

The reels have still not been located - and government authorities are appealing for donations to help invest in the new music museum, according to the Associated Press.

The Marley Family to grace Independence concert in Zimbabwe

Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Thursday, March 4, 2010 | 9:50 AM

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Legend - The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers (New Packaging)The family of the late reggae legend Bob Marley is expected to grace a concert to commemorate Zimbabwe’s 30th Independence anniversary at the Glamis Stadium in Harare on April 17.

The family, which includes the talented Ziggy, Damian, Sharon, Steve, Julian and Cedella, has confirmed the trip.

Show organiser Patrick Hundu of Studio City said the Marleys were coming to perform at this year’s Independence celebrations in the same manner their father was part of the festivities at the birth of an independent Zimbabwe in 1980.
"We were blessed as a nation when reggae icon Robert Nesta Marley came to perform in Zimbabwe at Rufaro Stadium on the 18th of April 1980
"Now 30 years later, we continue to smile and reaffirm that we will never be a colony again.
"And we want the whole world to know as we call on our comrades and friends in the Diaspora to come and celebrate with us and the Marley Family, as they have already indicated strong interest in coming to perform in Zimbabwe," he said.
The celebrations, to be held under the theme "Together As One", will also see a Chinese Army Band performing to symbolise the good relations between China and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe and China are this year celebrating the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
The Marley Family will perform alongside Zimbabwe’s man of the moment Stunner, Leonard Mapfumo and Sulumani Chimbetu, among others.
Their visit will follow that of another Jamaican musician, Sizzla Kalonji, who performed at the 21st February Movement gala in Bulawayo and held a number of other shows in Harare.

Another Jamaican, dub poet and reggae star John Sinclair aka Yasus Afari, is billed to perform at this year’s Harare International Festival of the Arts.

The Chinese-Zimbabwean ties will also be celebrated with an exhibition where the two countries will showcase their cultures, including the traditional foods.

A soccer match between Zimbabwe’s Warriors and the Chinese national team is part of the entertainment programme.

The Ministry of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment is co-ordinating the event.

Bob Marley: "The Untold Story"

Bob Marley died 30 years ago, yet his music is becoming even more popular.

CDs, DVDs, downloads, ringtones, memorabilia, literature - in fact anything with the slightest association with Bob Marley will sell nowadays.

He fathered a child with Miss World Cindy Breakspeare; survived three assassination attempts; was accorded a state funeral; and is the best-known Jamaican yet.

Meet Bob Marley now, as you have never before, in The Untold Story.

British music writer Chris Salewicz has gone into the heart and soul of this remarkable man and his narrative is a must-read for anyone seeking a better understanding of Marley and reggae music.

This is largely because reggae music, for which Marley is widely known, is a music associated with black African people, religion, God (in this case Jah, god of Rastafarians), and other issues to do with slavery, redemption, freedom and the natural mystic.

To appreciate the magnitude of this subject, one must understand its history.

From the time Christopher Columbus "discovered" Jamaica in 1494, the island nation was the centre of piracy, giving rise to legends of buccaneers, chief among them Captain Henry Morgan, who was governor of the island in the 1600s.

Apart from the original Arawak settlers, the Caribbean island today is a mélange of European, African, Chinese, Indian and Latin American inhabitants, testimony to a tumultuous history of forced migrations, the slave trade and New World influences.

Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945 to an English sailor, Norval Marley, and Cedella Malcolm (later Booker), and Salewicz traces the beginnings of Marley's life right to a tiny wooden house in Nine Miles, central Jamaica, where conception allegedly took place.

He reportedly read palms as a child, was good at maths at school and was an apprentice welder as a youth.

Marley's first attempts at music and recordings meant nothing in commercial terms and, as Salewicz would tell us, Marley did not make the initial cut at King Tubby's studios, nor an impression with legendary Jamaican music producer Lee Stratch Perry.

In 1960 he joined up with Bunny Livingstone Wailer (born Neville O'Riley Livingstone), and Peter Tosh (born Winston Hubert MacIntosh) to form The Wailers.

The trio, and the band, were soon to surpass established groups such as The Maytals, The Ethiopians, The Heptones and The Skatalites as the most famous reggae band of all time.

On homemade instruments, the band played almost anything musical, with Marley so distinctive in the smoky tenor, Bunny on the deep baritone and Tosh, the master guitarist equipped with a temper and prolific lyric writing energy.

While the exploits of The Wailers would warrant a whole book in itself, as they quickly became early celebrities in reggae music, Salewicz goes on record here to say these three artists never had an easy relationship, music being about the only thing that kept them together.

But, as a solo artist, Marley is captured here in all his glory, with the superlatives coming easily for Salewicz to describe Marley's musical career. He is The Legend, the first Third World Superstar, Rasta Prophet, a visionary, the Buffalo Soldier and ultimately, the Reggae Godfather.

Such was Marley's popularity in a world dominated by rock 'n' roll. But through the music this man was undoubtedly a beacon of radicalism with lyrics heavy on black people's history.

Unashamedly he smoked dagga throughout the 419 pages of the book, loved football, had an above-average work ethic and possessed something called a "natural mystic" - so clear on page 153 when he appeared to have predicted his death at 36, as happened when he died of cancer in 1981.
For one to understand Marley's music, one must be prepared to engage his spiritual beliefs.
Jamaican history credits the Prophet Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), a preacher who gave up the idea of racial harmony and decided that black people should return to Africa from the Americas and the Caribbean.
Marley was an early convert of Garvey, but in this narrative he became reggae's superstar because of a powerful moral spiritual authority at a time when the horror of the Vietnam war was big news in the US, and Jamaica itself was on the brink of civil war and unrest.
To complete the axis, Salewicz says Marley forms part of the tryptich that completes the "sainthood" as expounded by Emperor Haile Sellasie and the most high, Marcus Garvey.
Marley's first album, Catch A Fire (1973), was a revelation, followed by Burning, which featured such legendary tracks as Get Up Stand Up and I Shot The Sheriff. Eric Clapton's US version of the latter hit was number one for months on end on the singles charts
After that came Natty Dread, which had guests at the Lyceum Ballroom in tears after the all-too-powerful No Woman No Cry was played. Then came Rastaman Vibration, Exodus, Kaya and Survival.

In short, he was, and still is, a hero figure in the classic, mythological sense. He must have been the only man whose brand of lyricism and lyrical interplay merged so easily with revolutionary rhetoric, persuasion, good sounding instrumentation and pleasant stagemanship.
Add to that, he was a man who single-handedly revolutionised an obscure Caribbean music form, then called "streggae", or "regge-regge" in the 1960s, into a worldwide phenomenon that is enjoyed today in its various forms by millions of music fans.

In Salewicz's account, one gets a rare peek into the company that Marley kept, chief among them Chris Blackwell, the legendary producer who is perhaps the single most important man to have moulded Marley's music career.

It's a great effort all round, but one gets rather lost when the writer attempts to unpack the religious side of Marley's music, especially the chapters dealing with the cult of Obeah.

On its own, Obeah is an African diasporic word, a marriage of African animist and Catholic practices, as practised by descendants of black African slaves. In Jamaica today, it is known simply as voodoo, acts of the inconcieveable or black magic.

Salewicz is at pains to unpack this phenomenon in the Marley music and the result is that the early chapters fall flat in seeking to explain the unknown.

In other words, if the writer had stuck to music, he would have written a masterpiece, but the attempt at religious connection with reggae music is inconclusive.
Be that as it may, The Untold Story is revealing about the sort of company that Marley kept, his harem of women, the Jamaican music industry, politics and what it was to be a celebrity of the 1970s.
In 1994 Marley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1999 Time magazine chose Bob Marley & The Wailers' Exodus as the greatest album of the 20th century.

In 2001, he was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a feature-length documentary about his life, Rebel Music, won various awards at the Grammys.

Bob Marley: The Untold Story is published by Harper Collins at R155. More reviews and literary news on the Books pages in the Tonight entertainment supplement.
