Fourth time is the charm for Belizean Rebecca Stirm with her turtle- inspired gown

Rebecca Stirms turtle-inspired gala design
Having won prior challenges on episodes two, four and six, Rebecca Stirm’s episode 9 win makes the Belizean the winningest designer on Season Two of Caribbean fashion reality series Mission Catwalk which has seen participants from five Caribbean countries competing in its second season.

After a visit to the Hope Zoo, the seven remaining contestants were instructed to design a gown for a charity gala and a second garment for a charity luncheon inspired by one animal from the zoo.

Rebecca chose the turtle because it was “an unusual and unique animal that people didn’t already have preconceptions about what turtle- inspired garment should look like.”  Using a kaleidoscope patterned fabric similar to the pattern on a turtle’s shell; Rebecca created a gown with dramatic neckline while using layers of different fabrics in circular cutouts to build a skirt that would mimic a turtle’s shell while still allowing movement. For her second outfit the kaleidoscope fabric was more prominent and used for most of the blouse, while the pencil skirt was in a monotone beige..

The judges Keneea Linton-George host and executive producer of Mission Catwalk, Novia McDonald-Whyte senior associate editor lifestyle and social content at the Jamaica Observer; menswear designer Carlton Brown and guest judge designer Celia Levy commended Rebecca on the structure of her design. For Levy the fact that it was “wearable” was also highly appealing.  Her high scores won her a feature in Style Observer as well as a JA$50,000 (US$583).

Rebecca Stirm

Unfortunately this week, Kesia Estwick of Barbados was eliminated.  The St. Phillip designer has scored her first win two episodes back.  Six designers are still in the running for the chance to show at London Fashion Week.  They are  Crystal Powell, Gregory Williams and Janel Jolly of Jamaica, Ryan Chan of Trinidad & Tobago, Kerin Scott of Barbados and Belize’s Rebecca Stirm.

Belizean Rebecca Stirm winning streak continues on Mission Catwalk

Rebecca strikes a pose with her model Abenah Gonzalez
Caribbean fashion reality series Mission Catwalk is on its sixth episode and Belize’s Rebecca Stirm-the only contestant to win more than one challenge since the start of the second season on March 27th- has copped her third win with a dress designed around the red HIV/AIDS awareness ribbon.

In Rebecca’s design, the ribbon framed a high neckline and continued down the back of the dress forming a dramatic scoop and crossing at the lower back.  Rebecca said she wanted to create a look that would portray strength and courage since HIV is “nothing soft or pretty to face.”  She found the perfect grey jacquard fabric with a subtle print in the upholstery section at Pablo’s, and complimented it with a red underskirt that balanced the piece.

“I made an effort not to over-style and keep the emphasis on the neckline and HIV ribbon by sticking to a simple color palette and styling with a pair of chunky studded earrings.”

Guest judge Dr Sharlene Jarrett shares a laugh with Carlton Brow
For guest judge Dr. Sharlene Jarrett Ph.D., M.Sc., Senior Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at the National HIV/STI Programme, “Rebecca’s chic interpretation allowed the red ribbon to be the focus without overpowering the design.” She added, “The woman who wears the winning piece wile making a powerful statement on behalf of persons living with HIV.

Just as impressed by her work were the regular judging panel of host and executive producer Keneea Linton-George, Jamaica Observer lifestyle editor Novia McDonald-Whyte and celebrated menswear designer Carlton Brown who stressed to the designers that their interpretations had to make both a fashion and social statement.

The next best design came from Janel Jolly followed by fellow Jamaican Gregory Williams who was last week’s winner.  Trinidad’s Ryan Chan, who consistently ranked in the top four until episode 5 where he was safe, found himself in the bottom three.  Last week’s runner-up Ryan Berkeley (of Guyana) landed in the bottom lot for the second time. Jamaican Natalie Rochester ranked in the lowest scores for a third time and this week became the latest casualty of the show.

In a dramatic turn of events, Trinidadian Shannon Kwong quit the series and asked Kerin Scott of Barbados to be her replacement. What a lucky break for Kerin who was eliminated last week!
Designers were tasked to make a social and fashion statement on Mission Catwalk

Jamaican Gregory Williams wins Mission Catwalk challenge with Nicki Minaj inspired look

Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 | 10:11 PM

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Gregory’s Nicki Minaj-inspired design
Gregory Williams of Jamaica has edged his way to a win on Episode 5 of Caribbean design reality series Mission Catwalk after landing in the bottom four on episode two, where he created a culture-inspired garment; coming out safe on episode three which drew inspiration from the 1920’s flapper era and landing in the top four designers on last week’s episode with a dress that complemented a piece from Cinderella Hats.

This week, the designers were paired in four groups of three and were tasked with the challenge of designing a garment for one of four style/fashion icons: First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama; former Spice Girl and fashion designer, Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham; style chameleon and recording artist Nicki Minaj and Dancehall diva Lady Saw.
Judges and models face off on Mission Catwalk episode 5

The top scorers from last week’s challenge chose their group members for this week’s task. Two-time challenge winner Rebecca Stirm of Belize, Janel Jolly of Jamaica and Janelle Forde who represents both Trinidad and Barbados were inspired by Victoria “Posh” Beckham, while Crystal Powell, led fellow Jamaicans Natalie Rochester and Barbadian group-mate Kerin Scott in creating their  designs for Michelle Obama. Gregory’s group comprised fellow Jamaican Keshon Hawthorne and Trinidad’s Shannon Kwong. Designing for Lady Saw were team leader Ryan Chan of Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana’s Ryan Berkeley and Barbadian Kesia Estwick.

According to Gregory, he was inspired by a “dominatrix bad girl” and combined his love of all things black with Nicki’s signature pink in a 3-piece pink leopard print and black leather combination.

The winning look which included an off-shoulder blouse, mini skirt with leather fringe layers and a suspender with sequined belt was tied together with a pink colour-scheme.  “The boldness of her wigs, lips and make-up, was done in pink of course and since she's not into a lot of accessories, I went minimal with small diamond earrings.”

Mission Catwalk host and executive producer Keneea Linton-George concurred as she thought the “edgy and creative design suits Nicki’s style.” Other judges impressed by Gregory’s work were Jamaica Observer lifestyle editor Novia McDonald-Whyte, celebrated menswear designer Carlton Brown and guest judge veteran dancehall artist Marion “Lady Saw” Hall who remarked, “I love it! I would buy it.”

Apart from Gregory, Ryan B and Rebecca earned top marks from the judges, while Keshon, Janelle and Kerin failed to impress. It was ultimately Kerin, the episode 2 runner-up, who was eliminated.

Shannon dropped a bombshell by announcing that she wanted out of the show, and called a former contestant to be her replacement. Tune in next week to see who which designer will come back to design for a cause, drawing inspiration from the red HIV awareness ribbon.  Who will win JA$3 million worth of prizes including the chance to show at London Fashion Week 2012? Who will rule the catwalk?

Tune in to Television Jamaica every Tuesday at 8:30 PM for the newest episode from Mission Catwalk Season 2, presented by NCB, Supreme Ventures and Digicel. For those in Trinidad the series airs Tuesdays at 9:30 PM on TV6. Mission Catwalk streams online at www.televisionjamaica.com/livetv.aspx
