Wiz Khalifa to Headline International Night at Reggae Sumfest

S Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been confirmed for the 2014 staging of Reggae Sumfest.  The “Black and Yellow” hit maker will perform on International Night 1 of the show on Friday July 18th.

 

Wiz Khalifa, will be joined by Tessanne Chin, winner of NBC’s The Voice, along with Sanchez, Chronixx, Jah Cure, Zvuloon Dub System from Israel and much more. 

Wiz a  four-time Grammy nominee,  is known for producing albums such as Show and Prove, Deal or no Deal, Rolling Papers and O.N.I.F.C (Only N***a in First Class).He also has done hit singles such as Young, Wild and Free (featuring Snoop Dogg and Bruno Mars), Remember You and Work Hard, Play Hard.

He is currently promoting his upcoming album, Blacc Hollywood, which is slated for release sometime this year and released the first single off the compilation, We Dem Boyz  in February. The album will feature Grammy-winning singer, Adele as well as Miley Cyrus and Juicy J.

Reggae Sumfest 2014 will take place from July 13-19 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay and is being sponsored by The Gleaner Company Ltd., Jamaica Tourist Board, Digicel, Iberostar, Pepsi, Secrets and IRIE FM.

Konshens electrified Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night

2012 has been a big year for hot dancehall star Konshens. The artiste delivered an electrifying performance at the just concluded 2012 edition of Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night.
 
This was Konshens’ fourth time performing at the world renown festival and according to the man whose hits have made girls ‘bubble’ uncontrollably all year long, his objective was to deliver a show to please his huge fan base.
 
He stated ‘My objective is always to just come and deliver a good show because that's what people pay their hard earned money for, they come to see me perform and I in return entertain them”.

Well, Konshens certainly lived up to expectations.

As the storm clouds hovered over the Catherine Hall for the staging of Reggae Sumfest, Konshens, who has had a prolific year on the Jamaican and international music scene, reeled out a huge chunk of hits, beginning with the hit single DO SUMIN before going into another hit single 'Gal dem a talk', which left his fans begging for more as he delivered hit after hit.. 
  
As he paced through hits one after the other, the crowd was energetic and responsive as, “The man dem a buss blank, the yute dem a medz and the females a scream and bubble non-stop”, said Konshens.
 
A special feature during his performance of his latest hit single Stop Sign, 20 girls came on stage to 'whine inna di rd', much to the delight of the crowd which was wrapped up in the moment.

Konshens later introduced Subkonshus artiste Darrio who ignited the crowd with his fast growing single 'School Fee'.   Konshens’ brother Delus was called onstage and brought a bit of calm to the revved up audience with his soothing, acoustic track 'What tomorrow may bring', which brought a nice and easy vibe and had the crowd wrapped up in the lyrics. He was accepted by the crowd who showed their appreciation.

Konshens admits this was one of his best performances to date, and his fans have not been disappointed.

Konshens is scheduled to perform in St. Croix this weekend. He will then to New York City where embark on a string of interviews which include, Vibe and and Rolling stone magazines to name a few.

Toi & JahVinci electrifies Reggae Sumfest Beach Party

Reggae Pop sensation, Toi  and top dancehall singjay, JahVinci, took the stage at the Aquasol Theme Park in Montego Bay, to entertain the masses at the 2012 Reggae Sumfest Beach Party. This traditional event marks the start of the 20th Anniversary of Reggae Sumfest.

Toi, who began her performing career two years ago in Miami, Fl, has been making steady strides in the music industry. This latest performance shows that she has grown into a confident artist who knows her way around the Stage. With a wealth of musical styles and a powerful expressive voice, Toi laid down a smashing performance.

Elephant Man surprise performance at Sumfest , plus his $50,000 giveaway to a lucky fan

Elephant Man the “Energy God” will be performing at this year’s Reggae Sumfest on dancehall night, July 19 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex, in Montego Bay. Along with performing Elephant will be doing a good deed, he will give away $50,000 to a lucky fan who can guess what is hair colour will be for the night.

 “Mi a giveaway $50,000 to anybody that can guess what colour hairstyle mi a wear go Sumfest. Anybody whe guess the hair colour wha me a go wear pon the stage a go get a 50 grand! Serious ting,”Elephant Man said.

Ikaya promises an immaculate performance at Reggae Sumfest 2011

After copping several award nominations between late last year into this year, recording artiste and performer Ikaya has her sights set on delivering a knockout performance at this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay.

The singer and deejay who is best known for the hits Good Up, Hard Way and These Tears, says the Reggae Sumfest stage is one that should not be taken lightly.

In a release to the media, Ikaya spoke confidently about her upcoming performance on Dancehall night, Thursday July 21.

“Well this is my second year performing on Reggae Sumfest and I am honoured to be one of the chosen few to showcase my talent and to further promote the Jamaican culture and music to this vast gathering of local and international patrons.  Patrons can expect an immaculate performance and nothing but the best”, said a confident Ikaya.

Ikaya’s stocks have increased in recent months having scored a number one single. Her videos have enjoyed solid rotation on Jamaican television stations including HYPE TV, RE TV, CVM TV, MD TV, Negril TV and TEMPO Networks.

Ikaya is enjoying attention at radio with her current single Aint Giving Up which was produced by Irie FM disc jock DJ Wayne and featured on the Monte Carlo rhythm from Purple Skunk Records.

Nicki Minaj for International Night at Reggae Sumfest 2011

Nicki Minaj will be one of the headline international acts to perform in Jamaica at Reggae Sumfest 2011. Other confirmed artiste includes , Mavado, Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Tanya Stephens, Tifa and I-Octane

Minaj will be showcased on International Night 2 for Sumfest . Reggae Sumfest 2011 will take place at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay, St. James from July 17 to 23.

Johnny Gourzong , the head of Summerfest Productions, expressed his delight with being able to land Nicki Minaj for their show.

In a press release sent to the Jamaica STAR, Gourzong intimated that, "Last year we had a tremendous festival with great Jamaican and international acts. This time around patrons will again be treated to amazing performances with the likes of Mavado, I-Octane, Beenie Man, Jah Cure and so many other great artistes.”

He then added, “Nicki Minaj, one of the hottest acts in the world right now, will also be treating her multitude of fans to a scintillating performance.”

17th Annual Reggae Sumfest - July18-24

A packed entertainment line-up is being organised for the 17th Annual Reggae Sumfest scheduled for July18-24 in Montego Bay, Jamaica under the theme “Greatest Reggae Festival on Earth”.


Reggae Sumfest is a feast of parties and concerts, and according to a release from the organisers, they enjoyed record-breaking numbers last year. The line-up includes dancehall stalwarts Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Mavado and Busy Signal.

Additionally, the event will see international stars such as Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, Jazmine Sullivan and Toni Braxton; Reggae favourites Queen Ifrica, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Jah Cure, and Morgan Heritage, and a rare performance by Inner Circle.

The buzz has already started as patrons speculate as to who would be among the other artistes on the 2010 line up

The festival will kick off on July 18 with a Beach Party.
According to the organisers, the annual event hopes to captivate thousands of tourists and Jamaicans alike who make the trek each year to participate in the activities.

Being the Mecca of Reggae music festivals, Sumfest Productions is looking to make this years’ Reggae Sumfest another one to remember.

BEENIE MAN CROWNED 'KING OF THE DANCEHALL

Brookland Entertainment recording artist Beenie Man received the royal treatment at this past weekend's 2009 Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay, Jamaica, as he was officially crowned "King of the Dancehall" by the festival organizers.

Veteran dancehall queen Lady Saw presented Beenie Man, born Moses Davis, with a crown and robe during a show-stopping performance in front of a crowd of 30,000 on Thursday night.

"I'd like to thank [Sumfest Executive Director] Johnny Gourzong and the Reggae Sumfest staff for supporting me all these years and for honoring my legacy," said Beenie.

The Kingston native will release his 19th studio album, The Legend Returns, this fall. The album features the single "Gimmi Gimmi."

Beenie Man will also celebrate his 30-year anniversary as a performer with a star-studded concert in Kingston on August 22 featuring Rick Ross, Hurricane Chris, Heavy D and more. For more information, visit http://www.brooklandmusic.com/.

Jamaica shows Tito Jacksons one love

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA–Five weeks ago, an emcee's entreaty of "Are you ready for Tito Jackson?" would've been a vibes crusher at most major music festivals, much less one of the biggest in the Caribbean.

But on the one-month anniversary of his superstar brother's mysterious death, Jackson's Saturday night performance was the apex of this island's 17th annual Reggae Sumfest.
With a diverse blend of reggae and pop, the premier outdoor event attracts about 40,000 people – 65 per cent locals, the balance from North America and Europe.

Accompanied by a nine-piece band, and clad in an ivory suit and black hat, Jackson, 55, generally acknowledged as the least glamorous of his performing siblings, delivered a succinct set that included traditional blues, Jackson 5 hits such as "Can You Feel It" and "Rockin' Robin," and a skanking cover of Bob Marley's "One Love."

He left most of the vocal work to a superb female accompanist, instead showcasing his proficiency on rhythm guitar.

As the 15,000-strong crowd warmed to him slowly, he urged them to "scream so Michael can hear you."

Later he added: "He's dearly missed. He would love to see the support he's getting here in Jamaica."

His 3 a.m. appearance, midway through the week-long event's closing night, concluded with the presentation of a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for Michael: "the greatest entertainer that this world has ever seen." The ceremony capped 10 days of speculation about which members of the late King of Pop's family would attend.

Tito Jackson, in turn, presented government officials with a small glass clock "as a symbol of solidarity between the Jackson family and the Jamaica family."

The union was formed more than three decades ago when the Jacksons opened for Bob Marley in 1975 at the National Stadium.

Babsy Grange, minister of culture, entertainment and sports, was then co-ordinator of cultural programming in inner-city Tivoli Gardens. In an interview with the Star, she recalled the excitement of the visit by brothers Michael, Marlon, Tito, Jackie and Jermaine.

"They played basketball with Kingston College (students) and were beaten. They visited Bob Marley at (his home) and Tivoli Gardens, where the youth performed for them and thousands of people turned out to see them. They also visited the opposition leader Edward Seaga and Michael stayed out with the birds (in the backyard sanctuary)."

There have been no other public visits or performances since. This one came about after the Jackson family received a letter of condolence from Jamaican officials following Michael's June 25 death. Tito Jackson got in touch to arrange a holiday on the island, said Grange.

"He said Jamaica is his favourite Caribbean island where he could come to get over the grief. He said `Maybe I'd perform,'" she recalled.

The rumour mill buzzed about whether all the surviving Jacksons would come – or none. Hotel and media mogul Gordon "Butch" Stewart even had his private jet at the ready to assist. But the only other family member ever confirmed was Jackie, who couldn't make it at the last minute for "personal reasons," said Grange.

Though his set was short and unremarkable, the audience at Tito Jackson's Sumfest showing seemed to relish the opportunity to commune with a Jackson – even one who has never made a mark as a solo performer.

Such musical tributes are slated to continue around the world, culminating no doubt in next January's Grammy Awards.

"I think his performance meant a lot to Tito and to the people of Jamaica; they were able to relive a small moment of Michael Jackson, experience `touching' a Jackson and expressing their grief," said Grange.

JERMAINE JACKSON SLAMS JAMAICA CONCERT REPORTS

JERMAINE JACKSON has slammed reports he and siblings MARLON, RANDY and TITO are set to stage a JACKSON 5 reunion for a Jamaican music festival as a tribute to late brother MICHAEL.TMZ.com reported on Friday (17Jul09) that the brothers were planning to perform a mix of Jackson 5 songs and solo hits at the Reggae Sumfest, which runs on the island from 19 to 25 July (09).

This year's festival is dedicated to the Thriller hitmaker, who died on 25 June (09) after suffering a cardiac arrest, and their elder brother Jackie was also reportedly in negotiations to join the group for the show in Montego Bay.

But Jermaine Jackson has refuted the claims, insisting the family is not jetting out to the island. He tells E! Online, "No. TMZ need to get their facts straight. We're not going to Jamaica.

World’s Greatest Reggae Festival Honors Michael Jackson

The 17th Annual Reggae Sumfest which takes place in Jamaica’s tourism capital Montego Bay, will pay homage to the “King of Pop” and legendary performer Michael Jackson. As part of its tribute, Reggae Sumfest officials will posthumously present a Lifetime Achievement Award to the late entertainer.

It was announced by the Reggae Sumfest organizers that members of the Jackson family will be in attendance on International Night Two of the world’s premiere reggae festival on Saturday, July 25 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay, in order to accept the award.

It is understood that the family will present a plaque of appreciation to the people of Jamaica.“We are delighted that Sumfest will dedicate this year’s staging to the memory of this international icon,” Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett said. “We feel privileged to have the Jackson family here in Jamaica to receive this honor on his behalf and also to enjoy what our unique Jamaican culture has to offer.” In honor of the special night dedicated to Michael Jackson, Tito Jackson and his band will also be performing. Reggae Sumfest -dedicated to the memory of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson

This year`s `world greatest show case` of reggae music will be dedicated to the memory of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Reggae Sumfest officials said this week.

With just days to go before Sumfest 2009 gets underway in Jamaica, Chairman Robert Russell, at the Montego Bay Launch of Reggae Sumfest at Pier 1 on June 30th, announced that this year's staging will be dedicated to the `greatest entertainer in the world.`

Jackson had actually visited and performed in Jamaica in 1975 as a member of the Jackson 5. The group was hosted then by former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, at his home in Temple Meads, St Andrew. At the time, Seaga was opposition leader and head of the now ruling Jamaica Labor Party. The Jackson 5 was the opening act for Bob Marley and the Wailers at the outdoor National Stadium.

Russell said it is important that the top reggae show be dedicated to the top musical star, as the world continues to mourn the famed singer. Jackson passed away on Thursday, June 25th in Los Angeles after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 50.

Caribbean fans have been among those joining millions around the world in mourning his sudden death.

The 17th annual Reggae Sumfest will get underway this July with the annual beach party at Cornwall Beach, featuring the sounds of many of Jamaica`s more popular local deejays including Errol Lee & the Bare Essentials, Cameal Davis, Khalil, Timeka Marshall, ZJ Ice, DJ Mix Master Marvin and Crazy Nei, backed by Danger Zone Super Strong.

But it is the Jagra Dancehall Night, July 23rd, that is sure to crank the heat of this resort haven up higher, as a slew of stars, including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Busy Signal, Spice, Kip Rich, Flippa Mafia and D`Angel take over the stage.

On Friday, July 24th, American R&B stars Ne-Yo and Jazmine Sullivan are set to bring some smooth vibes to the festival while Morgan Heritage, Jah Cure, Coco T and Queen Ifrica are sure to thrill the conscious reggae followers.

The curtains come down on Saturday, July 25th with performances from multi-Grammy-winning star, Toni Braxton, Nas, Damian `Jr Gong` Marley, Tarrus Riley, Etana and Da`Ville among others.

Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong, says air and hotels are going fast but can still be accessed through the site along with tickets, at http://www.reggaesumfest.com/.

The Festival has devoted a section of its website to accommodation and fans can view a list of hotels in Montego Bay, as well as read short reviews and other information on the properties. Organizers say they will continue to add more properties as the deals are finalized.

Some of the hotel options available for patrons include the 5 star Fiesta Grand Palladium, which is a mere 25 minutes from the Sangster International Airport. This hotel boasts some 1,000 rooms, a fitness centre, a `club` for children, seven restaurants, and five swimming pools, and a spa.

Sponsors for the 2009 event include the Jamaica Tourist Board, Digicel, Air Jamaica, Jamrock Magazine, Ocean Spray, Jagra, Appleton, Carib Beer and Mackeson among others.

Reggae Sumfest brings in an estimated 5,000 visitors to the island, along with US$5 million in revenue to Jamaica, according to a survey done by the Jamaica Tourist Board. Reggae Sumfest is produced annually by Summerfest Productions

Jr. Gong Marley & Nas Will Perform Together at Sumfest

On Saturday, July 25, both reggae royalty Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley and rap luminary Nas perform together at Reggae Sumfest, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

It's not a Nas performance, and it’s not a Damian Marley performance. It’s going to be a Nas and Damian Marley collaboration, specially for Reggae Sumfest,” said Johnny Gourzong, Executive Director of Summerfest Productions.Gourzong said that this popular pairing was the result of extensive thought by the Reggae Sumfest team, as to how to make this year’s event memorable. He emphasized that this is the first time that Nas will be performing in Jamaica, and added that it “Will be an even more special performance since he will be performing with one of our brightest stars in Reggae music, a son of the great Robert Nesta Marley. What better debut in Jamaica then on the stage of Reggae Sumfest?"

“While Damian Marley has wowed the Sumfest crowd in previous years, seeing him perform with Nas will be interesting. They are working on a collaborative album, and the sounds of reggae juxtaposed with hip-hop beats should make for a spectacular performance,” said Brittany Somerset, Stage Photographer for Reggae Sumfest. The Festival starts with a beach party on Sunday, July 19 and then has three nights of live performances from Thursday July 23 to Saturday July 25.
