Jamaican DJ 'Flippa Mafia' Indicted on international Drug Charges - Faces 25 Years

Fifteen people, including Jamaican dance hall DJ 'Flippa Mafia' and his brother Kemar Davis were indicted with running an international drug ring.

'Flippa Mafia'  real name Andrew K. Davis, faces a possible sentence of 25 years to life in state prison. He is charged with conspiracy, distribution of cocaine and money laundering.

Also indicted were Marsha Bernard, Sidonie McLeod, James McBride, Angel Rivera, Juan Cortez, all from New Jersey.

Flippa Moggela Charged In International Drug Bust

ancehall entertainer Flippa Moggela, (real name Andrew Davis), faces several charges in the United States in relation to a major international drug bust, that law enforcement officials allege he was the mastermind of.

According to reports from various news agencies, Davis 34 faces charges of cocaine distribution, money laundering, leading a drug trafficking network and conspiracy. Also charged were his brother Kemar Davis, 22 and Marsha Bernard, 28. Six others were arrested by New Jersey police and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as part of a two-and-a-half year long investigation into the ring, dubbed Operation Next Day Air, which involved the trafficking of drugs across various American states.

Investigators allege that Davis, from his home in Kingston, would order Kemar to send drugs from California, where his younger brother was based, to Bernard, who was based in New Jersey. Bernard would then allegedly distribute cocaine shipments to other drug dealers, collect the proceeds and send them to the Davis brothers.

Investigators were tipped off about the drug ring thanks to two packages seized by detectives from the Camden High Intensity Area Drug Trafficking Task Force and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office in March 2011. The packages, sent to a New Jersey facility, contained 8kg of cocaine. Flippa and his brother were purportedly the recipients of this package.

In March of this year, search warrants were executed throughout New Jersey, later leading to the arrest of Marsha Bernard and Kemar Davis. During those searches, US$600,000 was seized as well as two guns and 26 kgs of cocaine worth US$780,000, which police say was just a sample size of the amount of drugs smuggled into the country.

Flippa Moggela was arrested on September 16 in Los Angeles and later extradited to New Jersey on October 3^rd.

Flippa Mafia single "Real to the People " soars on the Dutty Cartoon riddim

Dancehall star Flippa Mafia has returned with a bang. His latest single Real to the People which is featured on the Dutty Cartoon riddim from Board House Records, has been blowing up all over FM radio.


In a release to the media, Flippa explained the story behind the song.


“Every song I do has meaning behind it based on the things I am talking about. A me say star a star. Me a di real flossing King”, Flippa explained.


This isn’t the first time that Flippa has worked with the Board House Records team.  He describes the synergy with the budding dancehall label as a successful one.


“It has been very successful working with Board House Records. We have a good chemistry and this is evident in the songs that we put out”, said Flippa.


The dancehall artiste has recorded quite a few songs for the label including his breakthrough number one hit Dem Ya, Say Dem a Lippa, Bout Dem a Floss and Ova Mi Money.


Flippa has been quite busy recording on some of the hottest dancehall projects currently permeating the scene.


He is featured on ZJ Wah Wa’s newest project with the track Can’t Help Myself. Additionally he also recorded on new projects for TJ Records and producer Rambo.


The artiste says he is bringing a different flavour to the dancehall game.


“Right now me a bring a different flavour to the game. We a try to uplift the youths so they can enjoy themselves. We’re trying to bring a jovial thing to the music”, he explained.


The artiste has also evolved into music production with the creation of his Flip Money Squad and label Flip Money Records.


Flip Money Records debuted a while back with the Canary Diamond and Extra Fire rhythm projects which featured hits from Bounty Killer and Buju Banton.


The label’s upcoming project features a riddim created by Big Ship’s Stephen McGregor. The project is aimed at tapping into the hip hop market and according to Flippa, he already has two well known American rappers lined up to record songs on the riddim.


Flip Money Squad is comprised of up and coming dancehall acts including Skilly Banks, Kanambo and Placka Moggela


Flippa Mafia is set to perform at the So Flo Awards event in Florida later this month. He will also be hosting a number of parties over the Memorial Weekend in the United States and a pool party.


On May 12 he will share stage with the fireman Capleton at a stage show in Philadelphia, while on June 14 he is billed to perform in Chicago.

Reggae Sumfest -dedicated to the memory of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson

This year`s `world greatest show case` of reggae music will be dedicated to the memory of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Reggae Sumfest officials said this week.

With just days to go before Sumfest 2009 gets underway in Jamaica, Chairman Robert Russell, at the Montego Bay Launch of Reggae Sumfest at Pier 1 on June 30th, announced that this year's staging will be dedicated to the `greatest entertainer in the world.`

Jackson had actually visited and performed in Jamaica in 1975 as a member of the Jackson 5. The group was hosted then by former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, at his home in Temple Meads, St Andrew. At the time, Seaga was opposition leader and head of the now ruling Jamaica Labor Party. The Jackson 5 was the opening act for Bob Marley and the Wailers at the outdoor National Stadium.

Russell said it is important that the top reggae show be dedicated to the top musical star, as the world continues to mourn the famed singer. Jackson passed away on Thursday, June 25th in Los Angeles after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 50.

Caribbean fans have been among those joining millions around the world in mourning his sudden death.

The 17th annual Reggae Sumfest will get underway this July with the annual beach party at Cornwall Beach, featuring the sounds of many of Jamaica`s more popular local deejays including Errol Lee & the Bare Essentials, Cameal Davis, Khalil, Timeka Marshall, ZJ Ice, DJ Mix Master Marvin and Crazy Nei, backed by Danger Zone Super Strong.

But it is the Jagra Dancehall Night, July 23rd, that is sure to crank the heat of this resort haven up higher, as a slew of stars, including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Busy Signal, Spice, Kip Rich, Flippa Mafia and D`Angel take over the stage.

On Friday, July 24th, American R&B stars Ne-Yo and Jazmine Sullivan are set to bring some smooth vibes to the festival while Morgan Heritage, Jah Cure, Coco T and Queen Ifrica are sure to thrill the conscious reggae followers.

The curtains come down on Saturday, July 25th with performances from multi-Grammy-winning star, Toni Braxton, Nas, Damian `Jr Gong` Marley, Tarrus Riley, Etana and Da`Ville among others.

Executive Director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong, says air and hotels are going fast but can still be accessed through the site along with tickets, at http://www.reggaesumfest.com/.

The Festival has devoted a section of its website to accommodation and fans can view a list of hotels in Montego Bay, as well as read short reviews and other information on the properties. Organizers say they will continue to add more properties as the deals are finalized.

Some of the hotel options available for patrons include the 5 star Fiesta Grand Palladium, which is a mere 25 minutes from the Sangster International Airport. This hotel boasts some 1,000 rooms, a fitness centre, a `club` for children, seven restaurants, and five swimming pools, and a spa.

Sponsors for the 2009 event include the Jamaica Tourist Board, Digicel, Air Jamaica, Jamrock Magazine, Ocean Spray, Jagra, Appleton, Carib Beer and Mackeson among others.

Reggae Sumfest brings in an estimated 5,000 visitors to the island, along with US$5 million in revenue to Jamaica, according to a survey done by the Jamaica Tourist Board. Reggae Sumfest is produced annually by Summerfest Productions
