Meet the Contestants of Miss Jamaica World 2012

This year twenty (20) girls will vie for the Miss Jamaica World title for a chance at representing the country at this year's Miss World Peagent to be held on August 18, 2012 in Dongsheng Fitness Center Stadium, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China.



The 20 finalist were recently made their first appearance at Sovereign Center in Liguanea. The Miss Jamaica World 2012 crowning will take place on Saturday, June 23, at the Pegasus Hotel, where  Danielle Crosskill  Miss Jamaica World 2011 will crown the winner.

Jamaica's Quest for a Miss World Title

If there is a nation that we can put our focus on in the upcoming Miss World pageant this August, one can say that Jamaica could be an interesting one. Just recently The Gleaner,, announced that the country will select its Miss World representative on June 2. Jamaica is one of the successful countries at Miss World but interestingly, it is a flop in the other 3 of the Big4 pageants. How Jamaica managed to collect successes at Miss World when it is weak on the other 3 is quite inexplicable but the answers my lie on where the local franchises put their priorities. As a former British colony, the best in Jamaica are sent to Miss World, a British institution.

So what makes Jamaica a country worthy of our attention when the Miss World goes in full swing in Ordos, China this August? Well, Jamaica has three Miss World titleholders. The first one was won by the rather diminutive beauty in the name of Carole Joan Crawford. At just 5'3", she became an icon and heroine in her country where a special stamp celebrating her victory was issued by the Jamaican Post Office.

The second Jamaican to win the crown is a daughter to a Jamaican man and a white Canadian woman. Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World 1976, was born in Canada but grew up in Jamaica.

The third Miss World titleholder from Jamaica is Lisa Hanna. A TV broadcaster, she is now enjoying her political life in Jamaica and was recently appointed as Minister for Youth and Culture. She was crowned Miss World in 1993.

Aside from these lovely winners, what makes Jamaica interesting is that this country had never experienced a Miss World semis drought for more than four years. The last time Jamaica placed on Miss World semis was in 2007 courtesy of Yendi Philipps, who went on to become Miss Universe 2010 first runner-up - Jamaica's highest placement at Miss Universe. As such, 2012 is a crucial year for Jamaica. It could perhaps determine whether Jamaica still remains a Miss World superpower. A non-placement at the semis this year would definitely put a huge question mark over Jamaica's strength at the pageant.

Zahra McGraham wins Miss Jamaica World Sports competition Fast Track Competition

The contestsants in the Miss Jamaica World Pageant 2011 tested their endurance in the gruelling Miss Jamaica World Sports competition at the Spartan Health Club facilities on Lady Musgrave Road.  All 20 finalists competed in a track and field event as well as a fitness competition. The fitness component comprised of three parts, chin-ups, bench presses and sit-ups.  The sit-ups were first where Miss Acropolis Reeshma Ragbeer totally knocked it out of the park and walked away as the champion doing over 60 reps. For the track component, the ladies were asked to do 5 laps around the Spartan Health Club Complex, down Kensington Road, then Oxford Road and back to Lady Musgrave road and into the gym. With the assistance of a police officer, and gym trainer Steve Ming the ladies took to the streets of New Kingston. Gabrielle Blackwood, Miss Kirov premium Vodka was first, Zahra McGraham, Miss Usain Bolt’s Tracks & Records second and Liane Chung, Miss Venus Embrace placed third.

However, it was Miss Usain Bolt’s Track and Records, Zahra McGraham, who went on to win the finals in convincing fashion ahead of Liane and Gabrielle who copped 2nd and 3rd respectively.  It was then on to the bench press competition, where the ladies were tested to see who was able to do the most presses testing their upper body strength. This time it was Zahra McGraham in the lead with Gabrielle Blackwood right behind.

It was a very close competition, but in the end Zahra McGraham prevailed, edging out Liane Chung to cop the title of Miss Jamaica World Sports. Zahra is no stranger to the sporting arena as she also won MJW sports back in 2006. She has also been involved with a number of sporting activities during her tenure at Campion College. Zahra is now the 4th finalist to have fast tracked to the top 10 coronation show on September 10 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

Spectacular Performances Set For Miss Jamaica World 2011 Grand Coronation Show

The 34th annual staging of the indubitable Miss Jamaica World Grand Coronation Show is this Saturday September 10, 2011. Come prepared to be blown away and enthralled with beauty, poise and elegance as the illustrious Jamaica Pegasus in the heart of the New Kingston business hub will witness the crowning of a new beauty queen. With so many gorgeous ladies to choose from, the judges will have a very hard time. The organizers have pulled out all the stops from the beginning; from the launch to the fast track competitions and now the final ‘element’, the Grand Coronation show.

Speaking of element, the theme for this year’s show is entitled "Beauty of the Elements" with fashions from the Fantasy photo shoot that was shot at the picturesque Boone Hall Oasis. At the helm of the production is Weston Haughton who has been working with the MJW pageant since 1983. According to him, “the audience can be expected to be taken on a Fantasy ride as the contestants dubbed “Daughters of the Elements” will portray EARTH,WIND,WATER and FIRE in stunning outfits designed by the Uzuri International duo of Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams.” He continued, “The Stella Maris Dancers are the "Children of the Elements" and will, with, exciting choreography bring new meaning to the term "rhythm in motion". Musical Director Andrew Henry has selected popular hit songs that should have the audience rocking, he ended.

The evening’s showcase will be about colour, high energy, and beauty in all forms as the 20 ladies will 'tun it up' in a showcase of loveliness. Along with the expected glitz and glamour that usually accompanies the MJW coronation show, the patrons will be treated to an evening of live entertainment and stellar production in the form of the headline acts for the evening which will be the former Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires diva come designer Ashley Martin and reggae Ambassador Tarrus Riley.

A true star in the making, Ashley has paired her sexy and seductive image with her voice that has soul, originality and flair to create a powerhouse that is on the verge of becoming Jamaica’s next Marcia Griffiths. Ashley has performed at some of Jamaica’s most elite functions such as the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and has shared the stage with a number of award winning artistes such as Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and more recently Nicki Minaj at Reggae Sumfest. Tarrus Riley has been making waves on the reggae circuit with a number of hit songs with the most popular and far reaching being “She’s Royal”, an anthem to women everywhere. To date he has released three albums, “Challenges”, “Parables” and “Contagious” that are still receiving rave reviews from the public. With his movement titled BLACKSOIL, Tarrus has continued to dominate the award scene each year copping awards such as the Youth View Awards, the EME’s, the Reggae Academy Award and multiple more. Riley’s most recent high profile performances include the 2011 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, Reggae Sumfest 2010, Betty Wright and Friends in concert, and the Palmyra Foundation’s Fundraising event. He is currently working on the release of his fourth studio album, which is expected later this year.

Unfortunately for many pageant lovers, there will be no live telecast this year on TVJ due to the coverage of the World Games. With that in mind patrons can come out expecting a mind-blowing show as the production levels has been increased for this Saturday at 8 when the new Miss Jamaica World 2011 is crowned.

The new Miss Jamaica Universe 2011 is Shakira Martin

On Saturday night  at the  National Indoor Sports Centre, 24 year old Shakira Martin, walked away with the title of  Miss Jamaica Universe 2011.

The  5’8”, Shakira wore the sash ‘Miss Fiction Jamaica’ (for the popular Fiction night club in Kingston), also won the sectional prize for Most Aware.




Other sectional prize winners were:

Gabrielle Alexander: Most Congenial,
Tiffany Trottter: Most Photogenic
Kaiya Mantague:Best Smile
Debbie-Lee Baker:Best Skin Tone

Fourth runner-up went to  Peta-Gaye Simpson ,Tiffany Trotter  was third runner-up , second runner-up ,Chantal Zaky, while first  runner-up  went to Kadyan Salmon.
