The Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen 2014 Pageant To Be Held In Antigua On August 1st

his year 13 young delegates from across the Caribbean will vie for the title of Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen 2014, on Friday, August 1st, in Antigua

The event which will held under the  theme “Nuit de Dames” or Ladies’Night, Antigua & Barbuda, will see representatives from Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, St, Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and USA, all  converging  at the ARG, Carnival city for a night of pageantry and glamour.

 

Jaycees committee member, Michael Joseph, says this year’s show aims to empower women. “We’re trying to empower women while at the same time letting them know it’s ok to have fun; good clean fun. Hence, the theme.”

This will be the 53rd staging of the competition. The reigning Jaycees Queen is Lelessa Shillingford of Dominica.

“The Glam Six” Vying for Queen of Carnival title.

ix delegates dubbed “The Glam Six” will this year vie for the Queen of Carnival title.

“The Glam Six” includes Tamorla Millette is sponsored by Hakim’s; Heidigail Francis by LAVA International; Kizzy Thomas by Special Security Services Ltd; Jamilha Roberts by Flow; Leanda Ann Norville by CHAPA Bau Housing; and Russhell Ellis is sponsored by PaintPlus.

The six young women will compete in five segments, on July 28, namely interview, swimwear, performing talent, evening wear and costume, as they vie for the title of Ms Queen of Carnival 2014.

The show will see performances from The Elite Dancers, Sunnydale Dancers, Ricardo Drue and Claudette “CP” Peters.

This year’s theme is “Be Bold: Be Different: Be Extraordinary – Bringing the Glamour”.

Antigua & Barbuda Wins Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination

The twin-island state of Antigua & Barbuda confirmed its title as the ‘Romance Capital of the Caribbean’ when the destination was conferred as the “Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination” at the 20th Anniversary of the World Travel Awards Caribbean & The AmericasGala Ceremony held on September 14th 2013.

The elite travel awards event which is known as the “Oscars” of the travel industry recognizes and awards excellent performance throughout various areas of the world travel and tourism industry.

“After years of cultivating our Wedding & Honeymoon market it is indeed an honor to be recognized by an organization like the World Travel Awards as the ‘Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination,’ especially since the selection is made by members of the travel trade and consumers” said Honorable John Maginley, Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation. “We are excited to receive this top accolade however I would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our hotels, tourism partners and all workers in the hospitality industry, that without their efforts this achievement would not be possible. Book: French photographer, Thierry Dehove Releases "Home" - A journey through the Caribbean island of Anguilla

Established French photographer, Thierry Dehove, releases his first destination photography book titled "Home". The book is a visual journey through the Caribbean island of Anguilla, showcasing its spectacular beaches, landscapes, nature, architecture and overall beauty.

Dehove is a rising star in the world of architectural photography and has been recognized by well known magazine publishing houses and contracted by the likes of Google and other significant Internet and media companies.

"Home" went to print in 2012 and has caused a small wave of other photo journalistic books released by Dehove. Newer releases showcase varying styles of photography from portraits to black & whites and to Dehove's new obsession, composite imagery - combining predominantly his fashion photography shot against a white backdrop, then combined with select backdrops from assorted destinations around the world.

Mr. Dehove resides between the island of Anguilla and the seaside village of Delray Beach, Florida. He is scheduled to exhibit his photography works during select dates and locations in the United States throughout 2014.

Antigua Political Leader Gaston Browne said: "I do" to Maria Vanessa Bird

Antigua Opposition Leader of the ABLP, Gaston Browne 45, tied the knot on Wednesday with twenty- two (22) Maria Vanessa Bird-Browne. The couple has been engaged for two years and has a 14-month-old son.

The nuptials took place at Tyrells Roman Catholic Church (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) where 100 guests were in attendant. Guests include ; Governor General Dame, Louise Lake-Tack; Minister of National Security, Dr Errol Cort; Senator, Chet Green; ABLP members; Asot Michael, Robin Yearwood, Eustace “Tico” Lake, Max Hurst, and Lennox Weston; Attorney, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin.

The groom wore a black tailored suit and a bow tie while the stunning bride wore a white sweetheart neckline fishtail embroidery gown, adorn with a jewelled tiara and a rectangular cut wedding veil.

  The reception was held at Sandals Grande All-Inclusive Resort.

Kobla Mentor better known as 'Promise No Promises' in an entertainer who was born in Linden Guyana but currently resides in Antigua/Barbuda.

This diverse entertainer is a recording/performing artist, guitarist, photographer, film producer, actor, and a television host, who started his career a tender age.  His talent has taken him on a journey across the Caribbean, Europe, South-America, North America and parts of Asia where he has gained a valuable experience along the way. 

Now signed to DragunzDen Records 'Promise No Promises' music ranges from Soca, Techno, Reggae/Dancehall, Acoustic and R&B .  He has released over 30 single including hits like Can’t Stop Me, Too Personal featuring Tizzy, My Queen, Wings Of Love, Colours and Just A little Bit.

Promise No Promises reached top levels in Antigua and on the Caribbean side of the world, running his TV Shows, acting in films, jumping from stage to stage, and hot spots, heating up the place with his hard-core, energetic performance skills and party focused singing styles

His latest carnival hit “Wine it up pun me" was remixed by Don Ranking. Don requested the acapella to layer it on his “Ravers Riddim” that he had as an unfinished preproduction and so it came that a few clicks later, so-called “serious magic”, the lyrics fitted more than perfect on this very strong and bass loaded Hit riddim. The Remix came from a Bass fanatic, a friend called NEWFACE who delivered a dirty sounding “Hands Up” kind of UK Garage rave anthem.

Rebel Glam to release the self titled - "REBEL GLAM".

REBEL GLAM, real name Mrs. Selena Dodson, was born in NY but was raised in beautiful Barbados by a Jamaican mother and Barbadian father. She is a writer of songs, plays, poetry and prose, and a singer of a mix of genres, especially reggae.

 Since she is fairly new to music, she is known mostly for her spoken word pieces and has featured on national television and at many Barbadian events that embrace the art form, including spoken word shows and events put on by the National Cultural Foundation.

She is currently promoting her first album, the self titled - REBEL GLAM. This album is a mixture of songs and spoken word pieces which touch on many different aspects of love and life. She strongly believes that our youth need positive role models from both sexes and seeks to give guidance along with her art and to use her many art forms to better the world for the sake of her and your children.

Antiguan Alvin Glen Edwards releases novel "Once in an Island"

Antiguan actor and author Dr Alvin Glen Edwards has released a new book  Once in an Island, based on fictionalised account of events experienced by friends, family and others living in this sun-drenched island.

The story which is centered around Jamaican family in search of a new beginning on another island, but quickly discovers the transition isn’t as simple as they thought, as they faced  challenges generated by their new environment and issues having its genesis in their own island.

A film version of the book was released in 2009, with cast members Vaughn Walter, Jermilla Kirwan, Heather Doram, Patricia Tully and Gavin Christopher.

Antiguan actress " Anna Maria Horsford" appointed tourism ambassador

At the Annual Independence State Banquet in Antigua and Barbuda, actress Anna Maria Horsford was appointed the country’s tourism ambassador.

The award-winning actress and producer took a few days off from filming “Reed Between the Lines”, her latest sitcom project to travel to the destination to accept the prestigious appointment.

Horsford was conferred with the appointment by Tourism Minister John Maginley, who also recognised the actress for her successful 40-year career.

Horsford thanked the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda for the warm welcome and the recognition and support that she has received over the years.

She expressed pride for her Antiguan heritage and described being raised in Harlem by an Antiguan father, entrepreneur Victor Horsford, helped to shape her values and passion.

“My father was not a man of many words, but he was firm in setting high standards for his children. He worked extremely hard to provide for his family and was very supportive of other Antiguans who immigrated to New York. He was strict and focused, and I strive to bring this same work ethic to my career. I am here to say that I survived having an Antiguan father,” the new ambassador noted.

Horsford, who is best known for her roles as Thelma Frye on the sitcom “Amen”, and security guard Dee on The “Wayans Bros”, became the fifth tourism ambassador to be appointed. The ambassadorship created by the Tourism Ministry to highlight how the “One Family” vision can bring all citizens together to support tourism promotions.

Horsford was warmly greeted by attendees at the Independence Banquet. Though most were familiar with her work, many were surprised to hear about her Antiguan roots.

The new ambassador is already in discussions with tourism officials about how she can present the destination’s attractions and diverse offerings during her public appearances.

She also wants to contribute to the development of the local film industry and is passionate about youth development and empowerment. Horsford was a special guest at Guyana Fashion Weekend 2008 and spokesperson for GFW 2009.

Keldamuzik aka Diva takes over Antigua with Saga 51 TV & Super Power.

Diva has always put herself in the public eye using different tactics to obtain the buzz she deserves for her music career. Instead of the same old music campaign and chasing down industry insiders, Diva created “The Cultural Exchange Tour”, to grab the attention of promoting her artistry in local, national and international areas. From working with Caribbean artist such as Kirk Brown, Ku-J and DJ Outkast; to being featured in Germany’s Shuffle Magazine and a special guest on Australia’s Kiss FM; Diva has been more than welcome to bless each country with her presence.

As of late, “The Cultural Exchange Tour” has lead Diva to tour countries such as Antigua, which took place July 16^th – July 28^th, and landed Diva a feature in the Antigua Observer. Special thanks to Ben & Alexander Isaac of Super Power, and Daddy aka Lester Buffong of Saga 51 TV; Diva worked closely with both brands and performed alongside with Andy Livingston at the launching of the Heroes Music Festival held at Jolly Beach Hotel July 18^th, presented by Super Power and Saga 51 TV, which was a private event and hosted no more than 60 special invitees and close associates of the TV station. The actual festival will take place Oct 29^th, featuring Diva, Reggae star Jah Cure, Jamaica’s up and coming Andy Livingston and Antigua’s finest Sir Oungku Edwards.

The purpose of Diva participating in this launching, was for her to be the face of the Saga 51’s new media brand as well as off set the Heroes Music Festival Oct 29^th. As the face and spokesperson of their project for the portion of this tour, Diva participated in numerous festivities to represent Saga 51’s brand in Antigua including a performance on Good Morning Antigua, special meet and greets with the youth of the Steel Drum Band and interviewing some of Antigua’s wealthiest politicians. Diva also made an appearance in the hood and gave back to the community as well as cross promoting with clothing company Cool and Smooth for sponsorship purposes.

Maxi Priest rocked at Shirley Heights, Antigua

Maxi Priest gave an electrifying performance at Shirley Heights, Antigua , jam packed with over 2,000 party-goers.


Kicking off with House Call, the smash hit with Shabba Ranks, the arena was highly charged from the get go. Wild World, and Some Guys Have All the Luck really pumped the crowd, which were swaying to the music long into the night. Maxi Priest topped off what proved to be a spectacular night at Shirley Heights.

Also performing was reggae band Hygh Tempa  who started the proceedings with a high-energy set as the huge crowd flowed into the gig.

Itchy Feet also gave a lifetime perfomance with songs from the 80’s upwards played with heart and precision from rock and soca to reggae.

Claudette Peters rocks Labour Day celebrations in Antigua

Soca music star Claudette Peters delivered a crowd-pleasing performance recently during the annual Labour Day celebrations in Antigua

Peters performed at the Patsy Allers Playing Field and, according to a young man, she was very energetic. “She asked the people in the crowd what they wanted to hear and as they shouted the songs she sure delivered them one by one,” he said.

Amongst the songs she performed was her big hit, ‘Go Claudette Go’, and the song that won her the Soca Monarch title in 2008, ‘Bring it on’, She also gave a taste of what is to come for 2009.

Peters first made her mark on the regional and international soca scene with her hit single ‘Something's Got A Hold On Me’ with Da Bhann in 1994. Since then, she has had a hit every year including ‘Make Waves’, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Go Claudette Go’.

St. Paul cultural Festival for Antigua

Residents of Antigua are anticipating the Saint Paul Cultural Festival, scheduled for the first week of June. This year, Star Saint Paul, which is expected to take place on June 5, is returning as part of the Festival.

Romantic Rhythms Music Festival
The Romantic Rhythms Music Festival will not take place this year. Organizers cite bad economic conditions, but say it will be back next year. The first Romantic Rhythms took place last year on the island, and featured Damian Marley, Keyshia Cole, Kenny Rogers and Lionel Ritchie.

Calypso World Cup championship set for Anguilla in May

Eliminations will soon get underway for the King of King, Queen of Queens Calypso World Cup Championship. Calypsonians from 31 countries, including the Caribbean, England, Canada, the US and Holland, are expected to compete for the US-50-thousand-dollar prize. The first elimination round will be Saint Maarten against Anguilla on May 9. The semi-finals are scheduled for Barbados in November, and the big show will take place in March of next year in Antigua.

Vybz Kartel unleashes 'Sting' on Antigua

Vybz Kartel gave a workmanlike performance at Sting Antigua, held last Saturday, at the popular Millers by the Sea.

Kartel was the Last Man Standing. The final act for the night, 'Addi the Teacha,' as he is called by his peers, was in concert.

He had the patrons in a frenzy, rolling out a barrage of hit songs from his lyrical arsenal including Life Sweet, Picture This, Trailer Load A Money, Beyonce Wine, Tek, Wine Up and Wine Pan You.


A favourite in Antigua

His Rampin' Shop collaboration with Spice got three encores. The Antiguans loved Kartel and the song that was recorded immediately after the clash with Mavado is already a favourite in Antigua.

Spice, the lone female on the bill, gave a commanding performance. The raunchy, entertainer performed Fight Ova Man,along with other songs. She also invited a male patron on stage to do the 'Sky Daggaring' which got thunderous applause.

"Antigua a my place. Anytime I perform here the audience always want more, the man them love me and the woman them scream fi mi," noted Spice.


Love mi vibes

Egg Nog, who sang and danced, got three encores. "The Antiguans love mi vibes. I was surprised to know that they know my song Party Time Again. Antigua mi ready again, it's was all about the party," said Egg Nog.

Shano O had Lightning Flash in the venue, the people showed a lot love for his Ghetto Prayer and Crab Inna Barrel.

"Anytime I perform here the audience just show me a lot of love and mi give thanks fi that," he said.

Flippa Mafia, flossing Dem Yah and Dem Yah did the usual throwing of money (three times) and spraying into champagne in the audience and got a good response.

Sting Antigua was promoted by R Five Entertainment.
