Miss Kingston and St Andrew, Anjell Bryan Wins Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition

A

new queen was crowned on this year’s staging of the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition, Miss Kingston and St Andrew, Anjell Bryan capped the title.

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Festival Queen 2014 was at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew on Saturday, where 25-year-old Bryan also won awards for Most Culturally Aware and Most Active in the Community

Miss St Ann, Sharlene Codner, who was first runner-up and second runner-up, went to Miss Trelawny, Honica Brown, who also won Most Poised. Rounding off the top were Miss St James, Trudy-Ann Hylton, who was also awarded Most Congenial, and Petrina Williams, Miss Clarendon, Petrina Williams

Best Performer of the night went went to Miss Portland, Tahera Brown for her Jamaica Song.

Bryan received a $500,000 cash prize, along with other gift items and packages.

Singer Romain Virgo gave a spectacular performance with his hit songs.

JCDC Voting Competition- 50th Top 20 "All Time Best" Festival Song

In celebrating 50 years of cultural excellence, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is inviting the public to name their favourite Top Twenty “All Time Best” Festival Songs by voting from the pool of 47 winners.

Voting for the competition begins on Monday, July1and closes Thursday, August 1, 2013.
Voting can be done by text message to 876-444-2407.

Each of the 47 songs have been assigned a text code and members of the public can look out in the press, or visit the JCDC website and facebook page to view the text codes assigned to each song. Weekly prizes will be given to the top voters each week, including appliances from Lucky Dollar Furniture and Megamart Grocery Coupons. The overall top voter will also win $150,000 and other prizes at the end of the voting period.

FESTIVAL SONG SHOWCASE

The top 20 songs chosen by public vote will be revealed on Friday, August 2 at the Festival Song Showcase at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. This Festival Song Showcase will feature performances by some of the singers named in the top 20, as well as other contemporary artists will add their flavour to the festival celebrations.

A souvenir album comprising of the songs chosen by the public will thereafter become available as a collector’s item as the Festival Song Competition salutes the JCDC 50th Anniversary.
The Festival Song Competition which started in 1966 is the longest running song competition in Jamaica and has been the avenue to stardom for many new and upcoming artists. A number of singers and musicians can boast of the opportunities that were presented to them as a result of entering the JCDC Festival Song Competition.

Celebrity Cook Off at the JCDC Festival of Foods Eastern Regional Show this Friday

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) Festival of Foods Eastern Regional final show will be held on Friday, June 21 at the Chinese Benevolent Association, 176 Old Hope Road, Kingston 10 starting at 10:00 a.m. The festival promises to whet the appetite of the patrons by showcasing the creative talents of Jamaicans in the culinary arts with over 750 entries in the various categories. This festival promotes the use of local foods in novel and attractive ways.

CELEBRITY COOK OFF

The event will also feature the highly anticipated celebrity cook-off which includes Ninja Man, Dahlia Harris, Adrian Atkinson and Specialist among others that will showcase their culinary skills.

LARGEST COCONUT DROPS

To commemorate JCDC’s 50th anniversary Chef Nicholas Douglas will be doing live demonstration in attempting to make the largest coconut drop that is 50 inch in diameter. Other activities includes live demonstrations, mystery basket, napkin folding, table setting, and sandwich making competitions as well as the JCDC World Reggae Dance Eliminations starting at 4:00 p.m. There will also be product sampling and giveaways from the sponsors throughout the day. There will also be Value Added Seminars with presentations from IGL, Nestle Jamaica and Consumer Affairs Commission.

The competition is open to children, schools, institutions and youth & community groups and accepts entries in the categories of main dishes, dessert, wedding cakes, batters & dough among many others. The competition places special emphasis on the use of locally grown agricultural products to create tantalizing and amazing indigenous dishes. Participants are also allowed to formulate creative dishes using the sponsor’s products.

Sponsors include Grace Cocksoup, Grace Coconut Milk, Nestle Betty Sweetened Condensed Milk and Gloria Evaporated Milk, Dairy Industries (Tastee Cheese) and Anchor Powdered Milk), Jamaican Teas-Caribbean Dreams Chocolate Tea, Jamaica Flour Mills and Benjamin’s Flavouring Products and Jerk Seasoning.

JCDC World Reggae Dance Championship Elimination Show to be held in Japan

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the One Love Jamaica Festival Committee in Japan to stage an elimination show for the 2013 JCDC World Reggae Dance Championship. The winners from that elimination in Japan will travel to Jamaica to participate in the finals in August.


JCDC’s Acting Executive Director, Delroy Gordon noted that as the JCDC celebrates its 50^th anniversary and in keeping with the vision of becoming a Global Centre for Cultural Excellence, the Commission will continue to promote Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage on the international stage. He said “We welcome this partnership, which demonstrates the power of Brand Jamaica and we look forward to many others as it relates to our programmes at the JCDC.”



In 2009, the competition received its first international entry from Japan, the IVAN Squad which was placed second; they continued to enter and in 2012, were crowned JCDC World Reggae Dance Champions.

 

TRIP TO JAPAN

As part of the MOU, JCDC’s World Reggae Dance Competition Coordinator Juliet Cowan-Morgan will attend the elimination in Tokyo, Japan at the One Love Jamaica Festival on Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19, 2013. This year marks the 9^th staging of the Festival, which has become a staple in Japan due to the people’s love for Jamaica’s music and culture. The Champions of the 2013 JCDC World Reggae Dance Competition will also win a trip to Japan to perform at the One Love Jamaica Festival in 2014.

 

LOCAL ELIMINATIONS

Local eliminations will continue on Friday, June 7, at the Sean Lavery Faith Hall, Westmoreland and Friday, June 14 at the Ocean Village, Shopping Centre, St. Ann starting at 4:00 p.m. Eliminations will also be held on Friday, June 21, at the Chinese Benevolent Association in Kingston and Friday June 28 at Santa Plaza in St. Elizabeth. The national finals will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston.

The JCDC World Reggae Dance Championship which offers over $1.5 Million dollars in cash and prizes is open to dance groups of 3 to 6 persons, 16 years of age and older, residing in and outside of Jamaica. Entries are welcomed in the categories of Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Reggae Contemporary/Classic, Reggae Dancehall and Dance Narrative. Entry forms for the 2013 competition are available at the JCDC Head Office located at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10, all JCDC parish offices island-wide and online at www.jcdc.gov.jm. The forms can be dropped off at any JCDC Parish Office or taken to the elimination shows.
