Carolyn Desert Was Crowned Miss Haiti World 2014

wenty five year -old  restaurant owner  Carolyn Desert was crowned Miss Haiti  World 2014 Sunday in Port-au-Prince at the Karibe Convention Center.

First runners up went to Chistie Désir who also captured the Miss Popular and Miss Top Model awards while  Nastassia Raymond, earned  the second runners up spot. Rounding  off the top were  Jennifer Verdieu and  Rose Cathelyne Paul, who won the Miss Bikni award.

The  award winner was  Soraya Jean François - Miss Humanitarian and Miss Conviviality

Desert will represent her country  at the Miss World competition in London in December won from a field of 21 contestants. She also earned the most photogenic" award and became the crowd favorite from the beginning.

The  freelance writer and the owner of a Mexican restaurant in the upscale Petionville district of Port-au-Prince vowed to that she would support the youth, women and the poor.

"I'm going to support the youth. I'm going to support women. I'm going to support the poor."

She said Haitian women have more to offer than looks: "Perseverance, courage, resilience."

Desert  also will represent the country on trips sponsored by the country's tourism ministry.

Haitian entertainment Group - MEG Presents “TVice: A Christmas Affair” in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, P.A., December, 2013-- Maribou Entertainment Group (MEG), a new entertainment and promotions company in the Philadelphia area, plans to improve the quality of Haitian events, promote the Haitian culture and expose it to different ethnicities. For their debut event on December 21st, they have booked music icon, “TVice: A Christmas Affair” at the legendary Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia. Founders Clifford Raphael and Zdenka Pierre want to unite the Haitian people of Philadelphia while also supporting the many different projects that are already in place. “We want to host socio-cultural events and support upcoming artists by collaborating on their projects. We plan to sponsor different artists, events and anything we feel portrays our culture positively,” explains Clifford.

Despite the negativity and tragedies that have struck the country of Haiti, the people continue to strive and move forward in positive ways. Not only are Haitian people strong, but they continue to sing, dance and party throughout what most would consider terrible circumstances. Evidently, entertainment fuels Haitian people and inspires them to push on for the future. MEG’s mission is to provide events that promote the Haitian culture in a positive light and give the people something to look forward to.

“Our main focus is on exposing the beauty of Haiti. If you take notice, our logo is red and blue which are the main colors of the Haitian flag. Even our name, Maribou, is derived from “marabou.” Marabou is an all natural Haitian woman which you can also see on our logo along with hearts that represent the love and unity we have for Haiti,” explains Zdenka.

Haitian-Canadian singer Bérénice Dauphin Wins Tremplin Phare Gospel Competition in France

Haitian-Canadian singer Bérénice Dauphin was crowned the winner of the first edition of the televised singing competition, Tremplin Phare, in France.

This 31-year-old Dauphin beat four other young women in the final of this competition,, thanks to the combined vote of the public and four members judges.

"Addiction" is the First Haitian Film Nominated for Academy Award

Addiction actor and produce Perri Pierre

"Addiction" is the first Haitian film to be qualified for an Academy Award. It is the story of a young man who battles between his addiction to drugs and alcohol and his quest to find true love.

 

Film Company Amis Entertainment is teaming up with Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles, California to theatrically release filmmaker Perri Pierre's touching short film, "Addiction". The theatrical release, which screens twice daily from June 28th until June 30th 2013, fulfills the qualifications set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the film to be considered for an Academy Award in the Live Action Short category in 2014.

 

The screenings at the Laemmle Noho 7 mark the film's theatrical debut and it will continue to run on the film festival circuit for the coming year as the film's producer makes his push towards the 2014 Academy Awards.

 

The film's producer is: Perri Pierre, born in Brooklyn, NY, he’s an award-winning filmmaker and actor. After studying Drama and Theatre at Queens College (City University of New York), he decided to focus solely on his passion for film. In 2011, he wrote, directed and lead in his first production J-12, which is scheduled to air on national television soon. He later produced and  starred in his second production, ‘Three of One Kind’ with which he won his first award, a People’s choice Award by the International Movie Trailer Festival. Addiction is his third production. Other than his own, Perri has appeared in Law & Order: SVU, Cupid and more.

Wyclef Jean to Perform at Charity Event In Ghana

Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean will be performing in Ghana on June 8^th for the Michael Essien’s Charity Game at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The charity game is themed: “the Michael Essien Foundation Game of Hope and Inspiration” and is aimed at raising funds for five African charities

The deal was made possible by Essien’s former mate at Chelsea Florent Malouda. Also expected to attend, are a host of football’s big names including Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

“After the game there is a big concert, featuring Wyclef Jean as well, which Florent Malouda has helped with, and that will also be in the stadium,” Essien has revealed.

Haitian-American Author, Edwige Danticat Honoured by Caribbean Writers

Haitian-American author EdwigeDanticat was honoured by fellow writers for her book "Create Dangerously" published by Editions Grasset.

The pan-Caribbean awards panel, convened at the third International Congress ofCaribbean Writers held in French-speaking Guadeloupe earlier this month, awarded Danticat its literary prize.

The literary luminaries on the panel included Roger Toumson, President of the Association of Caribbean Writers, and Ernest Pépin both of Guadeloupe; Alexandre Alaric of Martinique, ElisabethWilson of Jamaica, Chiqui Vicioso of the Dominican Republic, Dominique Battraville of Haiti, and EmilioJorge Rodriguez of Cuba.

According to Toumson, chair of the panel, "Create Dangerously" is an extraordinary book that confirms the quality of the novelist: "The art of the description, the narrative that she displays in her work provides a sublime report of her journey back to her native land that has suffered from a terrible earthquake, which has marked her deeply."

She not only expresses her emotions and thoughts that she witnessed, he added, but she also questions her responsibilities as a writer and artist.

"At the same time, she has been able to describe the enigmatic beauty of Hatian paintings, which according to her, contain the secrets of a capacity to rebound in life, to resist misfortunes," he observed.

Toumson added that Haitian literature makes an important contribution to the wealth of world heritage and provided hope to all people.
Special mentions were also extended to two authors for their work written in English and Spanish respectively: "Light Falling on Bamboo" by Lawrence Scott of Trinidad and Tobago, and "Nécropolis" by Santiago Gamboa of Colombia.

The Regional Council of Guadeloupe expressed gratitude to all participants and supporters of the congress which has become an important event on the region's cultural calendar.

Meet Haitian Famed Fashion Photographer Marc Baptiste

Renowned photographer MARC BAPTISTE was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti. At age nine, he moved with his family to Brooklyn, NY. His love for creating images began very early, and he started his formal education in photography in high school. His first camera was a gift from his Godmother; he quickly began to capture the beauty in unexpected places.

Marc received a BA in Graphic Design and Advertising at NY Technical College, and immediately began his photography career by shooting the collections in Paris and NY for various magazines. This access to the frenzied pace and immediacy of the inside world of fashion set the tone for his style and flair.

Marc’s work has been published in Cosmopolitan US, British Cosmo, British Elle, American Elle, Esquire, German Glamour, Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, Spanish Harpers Bazaar, and Vanity Fair.

Haiti President Michel Martelly “Sweet Micky” does duet with Julio Iglesias at Charity Concert

Haitian President Michel Martelly, better known by his stage name of “Sweet Micky”, joined Julio Iglesias on stage at a celebrity-studded concert in the Dominican Republic.

 

The concert which is part Julio’s  “1 World Tour 2012” was held  to help raise money for impoverished children, in which  proceeds will go to the Pink and White Foundation, a charity run by Martelly and his wife, Sophia.

 

An estimated 5,000 people filled an open-air amphitheater in the Altos de Chavon, a high-end residential complex east of the capital of Santo Domingo and attracted celebrities including fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera and U.S. journalist Barbara Walters. Ticket prices ranged from $50 to $1,000.

 

Michel Martelly and Iglesias performed a duet, which is the President’s first performance outside Haiti since elected in May 2011. He was previously known for often bawdy performances before becoming president.  They sang "Corazon, Corazon" in Spanish and "To all the girls I've loved before," in English.

“I’ve been a singer my whole life, but I never thought I’d be here next to you, singing,” Martelly told Iglesias

 

Martelly thanked Iglesias for dedicating the concert to Haiti's children.

Sean Paul to perform in Haiti in December

Reggae superstar, Sean Paul has confirmed via “Twitter” that he will be performing in Haiti for a unique evening at Parc Historique De la Canne à sucre on December 27, 2012.

The event was also confirmed by the organizers Mario Viau Fils and Black Palm "Yes, it is confirmed. We have already signed the contract," said Frederic Rouzier Black Palm Events.

Other artists to join the lineup are T-Vice, Kreyòl La, J-Perry, and Team Lobey Ayiti. The event which has being a success in the past has seen performance from musical talents such as Jah Cure and Brick and Lace, Mario Viau Son.

Norna Augustave is Miss Atlanta Caribbean Carnival 2012

Twenty two year old Norna Augustave was recently crowned Miss Atlanta Caribbean Carnival 2012. The Haitian born beauty who resides in Atlanta, Georgia, will represents the State at the Miss Caribbean United States Pageant in October 27th, 2012.

Norna currently attends Georgia State University where is majoring in Accounting and minor in Computer Information Systems. She is also the 2011-2012 President of the Haitian Student Association at GSU.

The ambitious beauty hope to one day obtain her CPA license, open her own business and  create her own clothing line. Norna also dream is to return to Haiti to help in the rebuilding of her beloved county

"Little Haiti" in Miami comes alive February 18, with Carnival celebration

This Saturday February 18, Little Haiti in Miami will come alive for the first time with a Carnival celebration

The event organized by Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones’s office, aims to replaces "Little Haiti" on the touristic map and reopens the opening of the Caribbean Market Place which was closed in 1997. The carnival also aims to highlight the cultural corridor and the businesses in Little Haiti. It’s a way to bring economic development back, to have people come and make business in the historic Haitian district of Miami


Music bands will play and “Rara” bands will parade in newly improved streets enhancing the beauty of Little Haiti.

Artiste schedule to perform are Grove Relax, Rara Lakay, Rasin Lakay, Jude Papa Loko, a Conga Band, the Nancy St-Leger Haitian Dance Theater and DJ Griot.

The carnival will be preceded by the event Big Night in Little Haiti, on Friday 17, in Little Haiti Cultural center.

Shaggy to perform at "Gala" to help build homes in Haiti.

Reggae singer, Shaggy has partnered with South Florida based-nonprofit Food For The Poor to help build homes in Haiti.

Shaggy will perform this Saturday, February 4, at a the Food For Poor's annual Building Hope Gala to held at The Polo Club of Boca Raton.

Food  For The Poor, is the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 96 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
