Miss Earth interview with Kerel
WHAT ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT WILL YOU CREATE TO PROMOTE THE PROTECTION OF MOTHER EARTH & WHY?
I hope to go into the schools and establish a connection with our students enrolled in our Marine life programs to form a group that aims to bring awareness and help in the fight against overfishing and water pollution. The preservation of our marine life and ecosystem is very important to our country’s tourism and livelihood. I plan to also continue to work with organizations like the Bahamas National Trust in the fight towards Marine Conservation.
WHAT IS YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS SUCCESS AND FAILURE
In the world of pageantry there are competitions you will win and some that you will lose. This is the same with life but to me the only time you fail is when you refuse to try at all. Even when I don’t receive my anticipated end result I see my journeys as a stepping stone and not as a failure. I see the experience I have gained as life lessons and not a waste of time and most importantly I see myself as a winner. I would =have won understanding, love and GREATER passion to continue to give back to the youth of my country and to always represent myself with dignity and pride.
DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD/GROWING YEARS.
I grew up in a Christian home and one of the principles that I was always taught is that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I have learned to acknowledge his strength everyday and thank him constantly for his blessings.
WHAT LESSONS DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD/ GROWING YEARS?
I was taught to always believe in myself and to never be afraid to dream and not only dream but to dream BIG!! If it wasn’t for these lessons I would have never had the awesome opportunity to represent my country internationally and a platform to educate other young girls that they can be anything that they want to be!
MOST MEMORABLE – EITHER SAD, HAPPY OR FUNNY.
My first pageant experience; spending a lot of my childhood and teenage years as an athlete entering the world of pageantry in 2008 was an overwhelming new experience. One that I came to love, eat, sleep and breathe! I became more focus, I started eat more healthy and I lost the weight. I studied the catwalk, learned the fashion tips and blossomed my way into a beauty Queen.
Walking across that stage and hearing my name called as the winner after months of preparation changed my world. Being crowned the winner in my first pageant ever was not only the most memorable moment but the lives I was able to touch and reach during that year will never be forgotten.
ASIDE FROM YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY, HOW CAN YOU HELP IN PRESERVING THE FORESTS IN YOUR COUNTRY?
The Bahamas has a large amount of Pine Forest. One of the things that surprisingly keeps them flourishing is regular forest fires. This helps to clear the ground of dry leaves and other debris that begin to pile up and eventually create a different kind of vegetation. When these fires occur they clear out all of the extra debris and give room for the ground to be visible and when the seeds from the pine forest fall to the ground they have a chance for germination to occur and eventually create new Pine Forest. So the promotion of controlled Forest Fires is a way to help the continuous growth of our country's Pine Forest
