Dr. Guy Harvey

He is renowned for his career as a diver, oceanographer, angler, film maker, and marine biologist.  

Through a lifetime commitment to the sea and spreading awareness about is value; Dr. Harvey has helped transform the public appreciation for marine life and the ocean. 

Growing up in Jamaica, Dr. Harvey enjoyed all the sea had to offer. He loved fishing and sailing. Soon he was filling sketchbooks of the colorful aquatic life he observed.

He merged his artistic talent and love of the sea to become a marine biologist. His beautiful artwork decorates miles of boardwalks and oceanfront properties around the world. 

His work in ocean conservation, carried out through a network of organizations including the  Guy Harvey Research Institute, works to protect fisheries around the world. The  Guy Harvey Outposts, a collection of resorts, inspires guests to enjoy the ocean, promote sustainable tourism, and engage in activities that do not interfere with nature.

Rags to Riches Tale of Haitian Actor Jimmy Jean-Louis

His is truly a "rags to riches" story.

Haitian-born actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis grew up in the slums of Petion-Ville, Haiti until age 12, working his way to become a Hollywood celebrity. 

In 2010, his deep love for his homeland caused him to shift his focus from his acting career to help rebuild Haiti, which was ravaged by a 7.0 earthquake on January 12. He is the founder and president of Hollywood Unites for Haiti, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underprivileged youth in Haiti. 

Louis is an artist with international appeal. Early in his career, Jimmy worked as a dancer and a model in France, Spain, Italy, South Africa and England. He moved to Los Angeles in 1998 to pursue acting. His credits include movies "Tears of the Sun" (Bruce Willis), "Phat Girlz" (Mo'Nique), "Diary of a Tired Black Man", and the NBC hit television show "Heroes".  Jimmy currently has a recurring role on the CW show "Arrow".

 

He recently shot his most important film to date. Jimmy portrayed the title role in  "Toussaint Louverture" and won Best Actor at the Pan African Film Festival, the Trinidad and Tobago International Film Festival, and Vues d'Afrique International Film Festival in Canada. He was also nominated Best Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2012. 

He is fluent in five languages and sings. He was an invited singer on the Quincy Jones project "We Are The World 25" to benefit humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.

Louis resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Evelyn and three children.

Freddie McGregor and Etana to host the International Reggae and World Music Awards

Freddie McGregor, and reggae princess Etana will be the host of this year’s 32^nd International Reggae and WorldMusic Awards (IRAWMA).

The star-studded event is scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, at the prestigious Coral Springs Center for the Arts, in Coral Springs, Florida.

The celebrity red carpet arrival and receptions begins at 6:00 pm and the Awards showcase at 8:00 pm. This year’s top nominee, Mr.Vegas and more than fifteen other leading reggae and world music entertainers will perform live on the Awards showcase. The musical director for IRAWMA is Saxophonist Dean Fraser, who will lead the Dean Fraser All Star Band in providing musical backing for performers.

Top nominees for this 32nd IRAWMA are Mr. Vegas with six, Damian Marley five, Sean Paul, Konshens, Romain Virgo and Third World with four. Jimmy Cliff, Marcia Griffiths, Tarrus Riley and Busy Signal all share three nominations. The complete list of nominees is listed on www.irawma.com, where the public can vote to decide the winners

As host, Freddie McGregor will show a different side of his talents. Having captured more than 20 IRAWMA trophies since 1984 in various categories. McGregor has been busy promoting his recent album, “The Captain”, which has been receiving positive reviews in Jamaica and overseas.

Etana, who is rapidly building a strong fan base with her rootsy and realistic recordings will co-host the awards ceremonies and will bring her humorous and lighter personality to the fore. Nominated for Best Female Vocalist in this year’s crop, Etana also has a few IRAWMA golden trophies on her showcase. She too has been busy promoting her latest album for VP Records entitled “Better Tomorrow.

Freddie McGregor to release new Album "Di Captain"

Legendary  reggae  Artiste Freddie McGregor will release his long awaited album ” Di Captain” on January 29 on VP Records/Big Ship. The album's title refers slyly to his continued status as captain of his Big Ship production complex.


The 16-track collection showcases McGregor’s talent as a songwriter and his taste for cover versions, romantic ballads and strong cultural messages. Original songs include the heartfelt tribute to his island "Move Up Jamaica,” the powerfully pleading "More Love in the Ghetto" and earnestly romantic and gospel-flavored "Love I Believe In." As for cover versions, Freddie's draws from a wide and varied array of great pop anthems (Beatles’ "You Won't See Me," Luther Vandross' "A House Is Not a Home") and reggae songs of the past (“Bob Marley’s “Rainbow Country,” The Heptones’ “Equal Rights”). Each rendition is infused with Freddie's own unmistakable vibe and rich, soulful vocals.

"These songs were very specially chosen," Freddie says. "We took the greatest pains in making sure these would be classic songs that will last for a long time. I chose songs like "Equal Rights" because I love the message and because the youth need to hear it. We made a special effort to keep it as grass-roots as we can."

Sean Paul, Queen Ifrica, Freddie McGregor and Mr Vegas headline Irie Jamboree

*International dancehall artiste Sean Paul, Queen Ifrica, Freddie McGregor, Mr. Vegas, Assassin, Laden, Tony Rebel, Spice and Chino are among the reggae/dancehall acts confirmed for Irie Jamboree - North America’s premier reggae festival organizers announced recently. The event takes place on Labor Day Sunday, September 6 in Queens, New York.

Bobby Clarke, CEO of Irie Jam Radio, co-producers of the event said that “Sean Paul’s appearance will help the festival attract not only traditional reggae/dancehall lovers but mainstream fans who have now embraced music from the islands. He has established himself as the top artiste from the Caribbean and has consistently demonstrated his ability to score international hit songs, having done so with Deport Them, Hot Gal Today, Gimmie the Light, Get Busy, Like Glue, Temperature, We Be Burning, Baby Boy and Come Over” Clarke noted.

One significant change that will be instituted by Team Irie Jamboree this year, is the moving of the event to an outdoor facility at York College on Guy R Brewer, located a few miles from Roy Wilkins Park, home of the event for the past six years.

“We really believe that we have found a home at York," said Steven Williams, CEO of Black Emperor Entertainment, co-producers of the event. "Roy Wilkins has been a great venue for us however we could not ignored complaints from patrons about the lack of substantial park which is the main reason for the move” Williams said.

York College has a municipal park in close proximity and is just minutes from the NY Subway and Long Island Railroad which will greatly improve accessibility for many patrons who use mass transit to get and from the event annual.

“Our goal is to make the whole Irie Jamboree experience a memorable one for patrons and with this calculated move, we are one step closer to achieving our ultimate goal” Williams reiterated.
