Rihana to appear on "Talk Asia"

Rihana recently won her third Grammy, has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry and is still only 22. This week on TALK ASIA, CNN’s Anjali Rao heads to Seoul to sit down with singer/songwriter sensation Rihanna who talks in-depth about her latest album “Rated R”, her past relationship with Chris Brown, troubles in her childhood and her first nerve-wracking meeting with Jay-Z.


The “Rated R” album which has sold more than 2 million copies since its November release, is according to Rihanna “absolutely the most personal album I’ve done so far.“ She collaborated with Justin Timberlake on “Cold Case Love”, the song about her relationship with Chris Brown, and explains: “It’s a song that everybody wanted to hear, everything that I didn’t say for the past eight months, exactly how I felt about that relationship and how I feel about it now- that song says it all.”

On the relationship with Brown, she admits: “I know that I’ll be asked about it probably for the next couple of years unfortunately but I’m in a different place, you know. It was a rough time for me I’m gonna admit, it was tough and when I think about it, it was a really dark time for me.” On the assault and the huge media attention it received, she says: “It would have made it a lot different only because it’s something no one wants anyone to know that’s happening in a relationship. Even if it just happened one time nobody wants to talk about that. That’s just a memory you want to erase right away so seeing it plastered over every news channel like I felt like it was a natural disaster that was happening, the amount of attention that it got.”

Rihanna recalls her childhood and reveals to Anjali Rao how she caught her father doing drugs in the kitchen. Although she didn't know what drugs were, she credits her mother for ensuring her daughter immediately knew it was wrong. “I just remember that that made me know it was wrong. She just- every time she saw this specific thing- the foil and the ashtray- she just would go off and they separated several times because of it, and eventually it ruined their marriage you know, she was just like ‘you’re either gonna kick that drug habit and see your kids, or you’re not gonna see your kids at all, cause they can’t see you like that.’”

Her all-important break into the industry came through meeting Hip Hop superstar Jay-Z, a meeting as exciting as it was daunting: “I’m gonna see Jay-Z. I’m gonna see Jay-Z!’ I could not believe it. And not only that, there was the pressure of that fact that it was the audition of my life...You know it was do or die,..”

On musical collaborations with some of the biggest names in music and who intimidates her most, she mentions: “I would say the person I was intimidated by the most was Bono. Working with him, I couldn’t believe it was happening. That was something that I just put on a pedestal like it would never happen, or if it did happen, it would take a very long time until I was worthy of being on a record with Bono.”

For the girl from Barbados whose family still call “RiRi” back home, who’s still waiting for that opportunity dream duet with Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon, says her next steps musically - speaking has to be: “something that’s really coming from me. It doesn’t have to be sad, it probably won’t be as dark because I don’t want to experience that time ever again.

Claudette CP Peters to headline "Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant"

Antigua’s Soca Queen Diva Claudette CP Peters has been recently confirmed as the headline guest performer at the 30th Anniversary edition of the Digicel Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant to be held in St. Kitts on 30th Dec as part of the annual Carnival Celebrations there.

The exiciting announcement was made by the Pageants Marketing and Promotions Coordinator Wallis Wilkin at a recent briefing by the pageants organizing committee.

The pageant, which is considered to be the most prestigious of its kind in the Caribbean, has seen many big-name Caribbean entertainers grace its stage over the years including soca king and queen Machel Montano and Alison Hinds , Edwin Yearwood, Jamesy P, Rupee, Jamaican Crooner Christopher Martin and Bomani along with a number of well known personalities who served as guest hosts including Trinidadian comedians Rachel Price,Tommy Joseph and Jamaican radio personality Jenifer Jenny Jenny Small.

The talented singer/performer CP, is a multi time Antiguan Party Soca Monarch Champion . She first entered the competition in 2004 with Something Got a Hold on Me, which placed her as the first runner-up. She returned in 2005 with her Trinidadian penned hit All I Know, which she used to claim her first Party Monarch Title. In 2006 she held on to her crown with Make Wave and in 2007 with Showtime. She was also named the first ever Groovy Monarch in 2007 with her popular hit single Go Claudette Go.

In 2008, she made Antigua soca monarch history with a straight four-peat win for the Party Monarch title, and also repeated as Groovy Soca Queen as well. Literally taking it to the sky with her hit song Bring it On and grooving the audience with Carnival Day CP continues to be a reckoning force in the Caribbean region. She competed in the 2009 Trinidad Carnival’s International Soca Monarch, and CP made waves like never before.

Miss Peters is also a former contestant of the Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant having competed in 1996 representing her native Antigua. Claudette is one of the many success stories of the pageant which has produced a plethora of regional and international artistes including 2 time Road March Queen from the USVI Pat Raguette among others.

Atlanta Carifest Music Festival

Atlanta Carifest Music Festival, the first of its kind in Atlanta, which showcases artists from the Caribbean Diaspora, is slated to take place on Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 at the Adams Stadium, 2415 N. Druid Hills Rd, Atlanta, Georgia.

The event, which is the brainchild of promoter Venice Lawrence, CEO of D'VA Promotions, will see acts such as Soca stars Machel Montano and Alison Hinds, reggae artists Freddie McGregor, Etana, Tanya Stephens, Kiprich, Tessanne Chin, Singer J, Chino, Laden and Elly Ess & Supah Shane as well as local talents Sophia Squire, Barbaless, Nova Fagan-Lewis, MC Family, Mykal Somers, Balli, KC Tye, and Cutta.

The festival seeks to spotlight the Caribbean community in Atlanta by bringing together all the islands represented in the great city. Patrons can expect a fun filled day as the festival is slated to beginning at 11:00am.

Dancehall reggae diva Barbee will join a line-up of international stars this weekend for the 19th annual Jamaica Day Celebration in Toronto, Canada.

Carolyn Yapp the new Miss Jamaica Universe 2009

On July 16, 2009 , 25 year old Interior Designer Carolyn Yapp was crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2009. The event took place at The Refuge at Villa Ronai. First place runner up is 21 year old Fallon Harris a student at the University of the West Indies and fashion model. While 19 year old Krystina Black also a model, singer and designer was placed third

This year's Miss Universe will be held in Nassau Bahamas on August 23, 2009 before a worldwide audience of telivision audience.

In a interview Carolyn says, “It has always been a dream of mine to be an ambassador for my country and this is my chance! I know the competition will be tough but I’m ready to do my country proud and bring the title home.”

Carolyn was a pevious contestant in the Miss Jamaica World 2004 where she placed third, and also a third place winner in the Miss Jamaica Universe 2005 pageant.

Kamesha Turner - New Festival Queen

Twenty three year-old teacher, Kamesha Turner, from St. Ann, is the 2009 Miss Jamaica Festival Queen.

Miss Turner, who is also a CARICOM Youth Ambassador, was crowned at the national coronation show, held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, on Hope Road, in Kingston, on July 18.

Tamara Dickens, a 25 year-old attorney-at-law, who represented Kingston and St. Andrew, was the first runner- up, while Zulieka Jess, a 21 year-old student at the Norman Manley Law School, at the University of the West Indies, Mona, who represented Clarendon, placed third.

Miss Turner was named the 'Most Culturally Aware' contestant, while Miss St. Thomas, 21 year-old Jodean Williamson, received the award for 'Best Performance'. Other sectional prizes included 'Most Congenial', which was presented to Miss Manchester, 24 year-old Lanisia Rhoden, and 'Most Poised', which was awarded to Miss Dickens.

Miss Westmoreland, 25 year-old Chevonese Hutchinson, received the 'Popular Vote' prize, while Miss St. Mary, 21 year-old Alicia Ann McKenzie, was recognised as the 'Most Involved', in her community.

As her prizes for taking the crown, Miss Turner received a 2006 Nissan Note, donated by car dealer, Mack D's Auto; $200,000 and a cellular phone, courtesy of Digicel Jamaica; a living room suite, donated by Singer; and accommodation for one year at Christar Villas.

The competition, organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), was held under the theme: 'Jamaican Woman, Our National Treasure'.

NIKKI Z - NOW 'QUEEN DIVA' AT IRIE

When music maven and Diva Nikki Z got the offer to work in Jamaica with popular radio station ZIP 103 – there was no hesitation. After having already conquered so many feats in radio in the tri-state area, this would be a great opportunity to work closely with the movers and shakers in radio, reggae and dancehall on the Rock.

She hosted ZIP’s early morning show between 6:00am and 10:00am from March 2006 to December 2008. Her high-energy vibrant style improved the station’s ratings and purportedly pushed them to the number 2 spot, right behind Irie FM. Reputed as controversial, Nikki was suspended not once but twice for playing the unedited version of a song laced with profanities which she professes to being a genuine error. Although she issued an apology to the press, she was nonetheless suspended “indefinitely” by the station. Having left all her family back in the US, Nikki was not about to sit and wait on her reinstatement, so she upped and left.

Like the cat with nine lives, opportunity perpetually seems to visit her door, and she received yet another offer she could not refuse – from New York’s number one Caribbean station - Irie Jam Radio, 93.5 FM.

"Nikki is an exceptional talent and a radio host that I have a lot of respect for. When I heard she was suspended from Zip, I immediately contacted her and made an offer that she could not refuse" said Irie Jam' s head honcho Bobby Clarke.

Clarke disclosed that her show is simulcast to 4 additional markets – Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey and Atlanta. The Digicel Top 30 Countdown which she also hosts on Irie Jam is a 3-hour syndicated program aired on 16 island stations including Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda and Haiti.

Born Nicole Duhaney in New York to Jamaican parents, Nikki recalls her love for music stemming back to early childhood. Although her parents may have entertained other ideas on their daughter’s future, she could not avoid her fate with the music and the entertainment industry and it wasn’t for lack of trying.

Nikki served in the US Army for 4 years and was deployed to Saudi Arabia and although not a believer in war, she learned among other things, personal discipline and physical and literal survival skills, skills which have helped her a great deal in working in a predominantly male industry.

Nikki has also worked with BET, the Wendy Williams Show, Power 104 in Connecticut and has had stints in college radio. The mother of a rambunctious 11-year old boy who admits to not being the best cook in the world, Nikki still has dreams and still has challenges. Her mother was recently diagnosed with melanoma cancer and although a shock, she is facing this challenge head on along with the support of her family.

One of her unrealized dreams – her own talk show. Known and respected in the industry for speaking her mind, Nikki lauds talk shows hosts like Wendy Williams and Howard Stern. Nikki feels freedom of speech should be just that and she looks forward to the day when as a talk show host she can exercise this without fear of censorship.

Nikki’s already has a full slate for Summer 2009 including being a host of Irie Jamboree – North America's premier which takes place at York College in Queens on Labor Day Sunday September 6 2009. She recently hosted Boom Bang Connect at Club Amazuru in Queens which featured Bounty Killa, DaVinci and hip hop artist Ron Brown and was one of the celebrities that laced up her boots at the annual Celebrity Soccer Match at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens.

No longer a rising star but a star that has risen, her true test will be to distinguish herself from the others stars in the sky, a challenge she has taken on with guts and with zeal.

This Week Caribbean Round Up

The third annual Caribbean Regional Alliance (CARA) Theatre Festival will be held in Antigua and Barbuda this year. The event which is set to take place from August 31to September 5 under the theme ‘Uniting the Caribbean through the Theatre’ will feature over one hundred participants from fifteen Caribbean countries who will be showcasing their talents in drama, music and dance.

The honourees for the seventh annual international soca Awards have been released. This year the soca Awards Organization, Inc will be honouring the women in soca music. Among the honourees are soca pioneer Calypso Rose, 2009 Road March champion Fay Ann Lyons, Denyse Plummer, Singing Sandra, Singing Francine, Ella Andell and Allison Henercy.

Shanica Mercer has been crowned the new Miss Caribbean Diva. Mercer who is from St. Kitts also walked away with the Miss Congeniality, Miss Intellect, Best Seller of Tickets, Best Diva wear and business wear awards. The pageant which was held in Tortola started back in 2006 to showcase the creativity of young women who are sometimes marginalized because of their nationality.

Raeon Primus was recently crowned St. Vincent’s 2009 Ragga Soca Monarch. Primus is a member of the Madd Symphony Band. Some of the other artistes in the Raga Soca finals included Danielle Viera, Shernell Williams, Troots and Ice, Tabia, Full Clip and Squitty.

Former Kittitian Superstar dies in traffic accident

BASSETERRE, S. Kitts – FORMER Kittitian Superstar and the reigning Virgin Islands Carnival Queen Karence De Costa died early this morning (June 8) in a traffic accident in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Circumstances surrounding De Costa’s death are sketchy, but according to unconfirmed reports, the accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. after celebrating her graduation from the Charlotte Amalie High School yesterday.

Known for her powerful voice at the 2005 Kittitian Superstar competition which she convincingly won, De Costa also ‘blew’ persons away to capture the 2009/10 Miss VI Carnival Queen title.

The VI Daily News previously reported that De Costa stole the show during the Talent segment of the contest and received the Miss Cooperative, Miss Photogenic, Best Cultural Costume, Best Talent and Miss Intellect awards.

Chairman of the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee Kenneth Blake said, on behalf of the committee, that they would like to extend heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Karence De Costa.

“It is a great loss to all of us and she was also a very dynamic young lady,” he said.
De Costa was a student of the St. Theresa’s Convent School while living in St. Kitts but migrated to St. Thomas in 2006.

Amy Winehouse to help Caribbean musicians

Amy Winehouse is planning to help budding young musicians in Saint Lucia, the Caribbean island she has made her second home.

The troubled singer, 25, plans to involve herself in a number of community projects on the island focusing on music.

Her spokesman said: "There are community works planned in Saint Lucia that Amy will be involved in, but they will be music-based projects for the island's youth."

Last month, Winehouse cancelled what was to be her British comeback gig, following reports of ill health.

A statement from her management said it "regretfully" announced that Winehouse and her band would no longer be performing at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire.

The announcement followed reports that the star was taken to hospital in Saint Lucia, complaining of chest pains.

The Grammy winner - who has been staying on the Caribbean island while working on her third album - was said to have been admitted to a ward after fainting, and later released.

The Rehab singer has attracted an enormous amount of media attention with her battle against drug addiction and relationship with husband Blake Fielder-Civil. She split from her husband in November last year.

She also successfully obtained an injunction stopping members of the paparazzi taking photographs outside her north London home.

Photographers are barred from following or approaching her within 100 metres of the house.

Jamaica Tourist Board celebrates sights, sounds and tastes during Caribbean Heritage Month in June

The 5K Run/2-Mile Walk will be taking a new route this year through Chicago’s beautiful Grant Park and lakefront. This allows for an easy transition for participants to take part in the fun activities and great food at the Taste of Chicago. Live reggae music by local Chicago Reggae musician Kofi will greet the runners as they cross the finish line.

During the event, the Jamaica Tourist Board will encourage travel to Jamaica and give away Jamaican-branded goodies. Sunset Beach Resort & Spa will also be on-site and will reward the female and male race winners with a trip to the resort. The recently-renovated all-inclusive 430- room ocean-front resort is family-friendly, playful and features the incredible Pirate’s Paradise Water Park, new seaside entertainment center, dining variety, great beaches and spa.
