Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Thursday, February 27, 2014 | 11:21 AM

O

mar Taylor is a young skilled Painter and Tattoo artist from St Catherine Jamaica.  For him art plays such a vital role in his life, as he is self-taught and has been doing art from a tender age of 6.

I was very eager to talk with Omar about his work and his dreams of making it big.

When did your discover you talent as an artist?

I discovered my talent at age 6 in the second grade primary school level.

How would you describe your artwork?

My art is “inspiring.”

How would you categorize your painting style?

I have a free flow thing about me; I just make it up as I go along.

What is your primary medium? (Example: acrylic paint, watercolor, ink, color pencils, fabrics, paper, photos)

I mostly use acrylic paints and colour pencils

When painting what is your creative process like?

I try to be keen on details

What do you believe is a key element in creating a good composition?

Understand what you are doing and focus only on that.

What are your favorite colours to paint with?

I am very friendly with all the colours

I know you are primarily a self-taught painter, do you ever regret not getting formal training? Do you think much can be gained from formal training?

Sometimes, but l have developed a style that is unique and is my own. I do this thank much can be gain from a formal education as specific knowledge is always helpful.

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
The famous Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Jamaican Barrington Watson

You switched to a more natural form of artwork, which is tattooing. Why?

It was nothing planed the economic situation here is hard whatever pays the bills will work. Luckily it required skills that I had already possessed so I work with the flow and master it as I go.

Where did you learn tattooing?

Being an artist, it just came naturally. Friends encouraged me and the money motivated me more

How long have you been tattooing?

It started around 1995

Which is more difficult painting or tattooing?

I wouldn’t say difficult but challenging, on canvas you can always paint out a mistake but not on skin. So I would say tattoos.

What is your worst tattoo experience (client-wise)?

I made a mistake once where the client wanted "don’t make the same mistake twice" and I wrote "don’t let the same mistake twist”. Realizing the mistake I added “don’t let the same mistake twist your mind twice" that was the worst tattoo experience

How do you plan on balancing being an artiste and a tattoo artist?

My plan is to get to specific time where I can close off tattoos and focus on paintings or just burn the midnight oil as I often do.

What are some of the challenges you face both a painter and a tattoo artist?

Just people that don’t appreciate your effort and work as an artist.  If you’re not in the spotlight they tend to want to lower your prices while overlooking your efforts

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Being recognised locally as a talented artist and selling my paintings all over the world

Where can people buy your painting?

For now interested persons can contact me at 1(876)-854-5202 or 1(876)-886-2456.
