Usain Bolt wins Laureus World Sportsman of the Year

Usain Bolt was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for the third time at the sport awards function in Rio de Janeiro on Monday night, following his triple gold-medal winning performance at London 2012, for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

"This last season was a tough year," said Bolt who was contending against  Michael Phelps, Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel, double Olympic champion Mo Farah and four-time FIFA world player of the year Lionel Messi

British heptathlete Jessica Ennis was chosen as the sportswoman of the year for 2012, including in this category was Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.   Andy Murray was named the top breakthrough athlete, while Felix Sanchez captured the main comeback athlete award.

The winners of the awards are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, a jury made up of 46 sports stars.

The ceremony was televised for the first time, and was hosted by actor Morgan Freeman and actress Eva Longoria.
