Sergio Francisco, son of the legendary Dr. Slinger Francisco, used what came naturally for him to capture the Tent 12 Diego Martin Calypso Monarch 2013 title over the weekend. This has been the pinnacle of the Young Birdie who has progressed and grown as an emerging calypsonian following in the traditions of many before him.

Sergio, performing under the stage name 'Shylocks' dethroned last year's winner, Jay-C (Bridget Priest) last Friday at the Tent in Patna Village, Diego Martin with his moving and powerful social commentary, 'When You Take a Life'. With deep, thoughtful lyrics about the consequences attached to making rash decisions, he was able to not only get the judges nod for his composition and performance, but he was also able to win over the crowd, who came to support many of their hometown favorites.

His success at the regional tent was a major win for him after a slow start for the season. He placed eighth in the qualifying 'Stars of Tomorrow' held earlier last month at the University of West Indies. Not fazed by the results, young Sparrow, who also has had a successful stint with Classic Ruso's calypso Tent in City Hall, took the criticisms and improved on his performances and went on to secure third place in the Young Kings Calypso Monarch 2013, just missing second place by the smallest of margins. "Winning the Tent 12 Diego Martin Calypso Monarch was a wonderful experience and I learned a lot from performing in the tent and the competitions, which I will be carrying with me as I look forward to next year's competition." he said.

Sergio isn't just about following in his father's musical legacy, as he's busy developing his own unique style as well. No stranger to music, he effortlessly blends in calypso, coca, reggae and dance floor with the edgier sounds of hip-hop, rock and Nu-metal into several tracks he has penned with planned future releases under his label, Black Spear Music. Although calypso courses through him, he has long accepted the reality that such music is seasonal and plans on releasing several experimental tracks with the label that has given him the green light to share music tailored specifically to the world.
