The event takes place at St. Clement of Ohrid Banquet Hall in Toronto at 6:30pm and will showcase Dominica’s cultural heritage, through traditional dances, folk songs and a colourful display of Dominica’s national dress the “Wob Dwiyet ".
The Miss Wob
Dwiyet Canada Pageant will feature eight (8) young ladies of Dominican
descent, ages 16 - 24, who will be judged on their display and knowledge of
Dominica's culture and rich history. Contestants will prepare for the pageant
through extended training in cultural dance and wardrobe, public speaking and
media awareness under the guidance of Dominica's former National Queen, Paula
DelSol.
The CDOA has for the
past several years hosted alternate Miss Wob Dwiyet and Madam
Wob Dwiyet pageants. At the CDOA's 3rd Annual Madam Wob Dwiyet Pageant
last year, the winning title went to Juliana Gregoire who currently serves as
the CDOA's Senior Cultural Ambassador.
As in the past years,
this event with its long-standing history of success is expected to attract a
large audience of Dominicans and Friends of Dominica.
The CDOA continues to
grow in popularity and is considered one of Toronto's leading National
Caribbean Associations. Throughout its forty-two (42) year history, the CDOA
has promoted Dominica's culture, raised funds for health care services, awarded
several academic scholarships and assisted farmers in Dominica after the
destruction of Hurricane Dean. Recently, the CDOA began a series of wellness
events for Seniors and will be undertaking Diabetes prevention initiatives
later this year.
As the Commonwealth of
Dominica, Ontario Association (CDOA) celebrates its 42nd anniversary this year;
a deserving Dominican will be awarded the Dominican of Distinction Award for
his/her contribution to advancement of Dominica’s image overseas, at the second
event celebrating Dominica's Independence, later this year.
Officially called the Commonwealth of Dominica, the island is located in the centre of the Caribbean islands chain. It is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean for its exceptional flora and fauna and boasts numerous rivers, mountains and extensive rain forests. Its extensive national parks system includes the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage site.
Within it, in the Valley
of Desolation, lies the Boiling Lake - the second largest thermally-active lake
in the world. Dominica is unique as home to the Carib Indians, the only
surviving pre-Columbian population in the eastern Caribbean.
