The sights sounds, smells and tastes of Jamaica will take over London this weekend as the capital swaps culture with the Caribbean island for the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project. More than 10 million people in 50 countries around the world will be taking part, including Australia swapping with Italy and the US swapping with the Netherlands.
On the night in London, the authentic sounds of the Caribbean will be provided by The Jolly Boys, the legendary septuagenarian Jamaican mento band who were named by Errol Flynn, and have, during their five decade long career, played for Hollywood royalty including Sean Connery, and Ian Flemming. British Stars including Ms Dynamite who has Jamaican roots and Assasin will also be performing whilst Basement Jaxx, Rob da Bank, Toddla T and Reggae Roast will be spinning the decks with Jamaican inspired DJ sets.
Enormous real palm trees, carnival dancers and a steel drum band will transform London’s venue Alexandra Palace into an authentic Kingston street party whilst across the Atlantic a quintessentially British event will be hosted, with red phone boxes popping up and London black cabs driving around the island.
The London event, which sold out of 2000 tickets before the line-up was even announced, has been curated with the help of the public. Guests can learn how to make cocktails from professional mixologists, and enjoy authentic street food from a Jamaican market stall serving throughout the night. A second room, The Sombrero Club, is named after an original Jamaican dance hall and will see DJs and guests groove to the latest ska, reggae, ragga and dance sounds.
