Countdown to CFW 2011
Starting this week, read about the exciting line-up of designers whose garments will grace the catwalk in this year's Gleaner-sponsored Pulse Caribbean Fashionweek.
British designer Victoria Brown returns to her roots for her debut collection in this year's Caribbean Fashionweek (CFW).
June 8-13 will be a celebration of fashion festivities as Pulse's CFW enters a new decade. Celebrities, supermodels, buyers, industry professionals, media, and a solid line-up of designers will travel to the culture capital of the Caribbean for this fixture on the international fashion calendar.
Brown is one of the many new designers scheduled to take her line to the live audience in Kingston and millions around the world who will see the collections via delayed television broadcasts.
Born in England to Jamaican parents, Brown decided to return to her roots and has set up base in Negril. For her design perspective, it's about all that inspires her from the people she encounters to the places she visits. With quite a broad spectrum from which to draw inspiration, the focus of her collection will be designs "created specifically for the confident curvy woman with classy, elegant tastes". According to Brown, the woman who wears her clothes is self-aware, has inner strength, beauty and commands respect.
The needle of Brown's career compass has been settled from her teenage years. She engrossed herself in fashion magazines, making notes and cutting out images of the most eye-catching garments to later post on the walls of her bedroom.
Well travelled
It was not until after extensive travel that she realised what her true calling was. She has resided in nine countries for various lengths of time and her senses were constantly bombarded with new sounds, smells and colours. She experienced different cultures and admired their architecture, tastes and fashion sense. She conveyed those inspirations into sketches, always passionate about illustrations and art. This was only one step from embarking on the career of full-time fashion designer.
CFW showcases designers from many different countries, each year including representatives from the French, English, Spanish and Dutch Caribbean, as well as Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Central America and Asia. The event also focuses on business and exhibition hall, seminars and networking opportunities for designers. CFW also gives patrons a complete entertainment experience with superstar artiste performances and after parties held across the city.
