Sir Grantley Herbert Adams - Activist and Barbados National Hero

orn on 28 April 1898 in Colliston, Government Hill, St. Michael, on 28 April 189, Grantley was the third of seven kids born to Fitzherbert Adams and the former Rosa Frances Turney.

As a youngster Grantley was educated at St. Giles and at Harrison College in Barbados. In 1918 he was awarded the Barbados Scholarship and then on to study at Oxford University in London. He later became a lawyer.

In 1929 he got married to Grace Thorne at St. John's Church and produced a child J.M.G.M. 'Tom' Adams, who followed in his father’s footstep and won the Barbados Scholarship, and attended Oxford to become a lawyer. Tom Adams would later be elected as Barbados' second Prime Minister from (1976 - 1985).

Grantley Adams was elected into the House of Assembly (1934, 1935, and 1936). In 1938, he helped form the Barbados Progressive League now called the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) League, a position which he held until 1941.

From 1941 to 1954, Adams was president of the Barbados Workers 'Union (BWU). During his presidency, he advocated independence, unionism and power to the disenfranchised.  In 1942 the exclusive income qualification was lowered and women were given the right to vote. He was a social reformer bent on achieving human rights for Barbadians.

Grantley became the first Premier of Barbados and the only Prime Minister of the now defunct West Indies Federation, serving from 1958 to 1962.

In 1957 he was knighted and Sir Grantley Adams is one of Barbados 10 National Heroes.

Sir Grantley Adams died in 1976 at the age of 73. He is buried at St. Michael's Cathedral.

In 1976, Seawell Airport was renamed Grantley Adams International Airport. Adams is one of Barbados' National Heroes.  A statue in honour of Adams is located in front of the Government Headquarters at Bay Street, St. Michael. A local secondary school was also named after him. His image appears on Barbados' $100 notes.

Meet the delegates for Miss Barbados World 2013 Pageant

The Miss Barbados World 2013 pageant was launched last weekend at the Barbados Concord Experience.

This year eight delegates will be vying for the title to represents Barbados at the Sentul International Convention Center in Indonesia on September 28^th.

The theme of this year’s pageant “The Tale Of A Swan”, which will be held in June, will seek to highlight the journey of eight unpolished dames on the quest to become a queen.

Inside Rihanna’s new $12 million home

Bajan singer Rihanna just paid $12 million for an 11,000-square-foot home with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and a luxury kitchen, in the Pacific Palisades.

 

The home which has tropical villa feel also boast an elevated pool area, which comes complete with a spa, sundeck, barbecue and bar. There’s another sundeck on the top floor, and nearby is a separate 6,000-square-foot yard.

Alexander Forde of Barbados is Mr. Caribbean International 2012

The Mr. Caribbean International competition was held this past weekend at Hedonism II resort in Negril, Jamaica. The competition which is in its 10th year was staged under the theme “Top Guns”

 

Four hundred metre hurdler and fitness specialist, Alexander Forde of Barbados, walked away with the title of Mr. Caribbean International from a field of fabulous men from across the Caribbean

 

It appears as if the masses knew it right from the start. Not only was Forde crowned the overall winner, but he was also voted the favourite in the Peoples’ Choice competition. It’s been said that Forde bears a striking resemblance to legendary Jamaican Olympian, Usain Bolt. Just like Bolt, Forde ensured that he delivered as he won the competition’s rigorous fitness challenge with ease.

Forde flew the Barbadian flag high as he secured the island’s first victory in the 10-year history of the competition. Standing with Forde in the top three were 1st runner-up Andre Walker from Jamaica and 2nd runner-up Nathaniel Goodwin from USA. Walker was also awarded with the prize for Best Physique. Forde walks away with several prizes including $2,500 USD and a 5-night stay at Hedonism II resort.

"Queen of Soca” Alison Hinds to perform at “Girl Power” concert in Florida

The “Queen of Soca” Alison Hinds will captivate the audience with one of her high energy shows at the 11th annual “Girl Power” concert on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Hialeah Park (2200 East 4th Ave - Hialeah, FL). She is one of the most recognized female artists in the Soca music arena. She possess one of the most alluring and powerful voices in the soca genre. Performing for only one exclusive show during Miami Broward Carnival, South Florida fans wait with anticipation and excitement for the women who is known for her standout song “Roll It Gal”.


A true testament that Alison’s talent is appreciated globally, her video release of “Faluma/Makelele” video premiered on the African Channel. The video is now at 19K views on You Tube after just a month.



This summer Alison took centre stage at the Jazz Reggae concert at UCLA, and the PanJazz 2012 concert at Lincoln Centre in NYC. Alison was also the only female performer at this year’s Hot 97 On Da Reggae Tip Show that was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom during the West Indian Day Parade week in NYC.

A recipient for ‘Outstanding work in Calypso, Zouk Award and the Caribbean Heritage Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Soca Music as an icon of the “girl’s” power movement, Alison has carved out the perfect niche for herself.

She recently launched the Alison Hinds Wonderland Foundation in her homeland of Barbados. The Foundation is created for the empowerment of women. The mission of the foundation is to help improve the quality of life for girls, women and families worldwide. Although, the Foundation is primarily in Barbados, the mission of the project is to ensure that the message of the foundation is heard and felt globally to encourage women empowerment everywhere.
