Meet Former Professional Cricketer Turned Singer - Omari Banks

Born in Anguilla, singer songwriter, Omari Banks is on a  musical mission to spread messages of love and consciousness with his assimilation of traditional Jamaican Reggae music accentuated with Rock and Blues backbeats, in an  adult contemporary fusion that he blends seamlessly with  Lovers Rock and R ‘n’ B.

 

Since his unexpected retirement in 2012 from a successful, professional cricket career, Omari has dedicated himself to his music and is now ready to unleash his first message to  the world with his debut album, Move On.

The 10-track album recorded in Jamaica, Houston, Texas and at home in Anguilla, is a melange of Omari’s musical influences and what he likes to call his “contribution to a legacy his dad (Bankie Banx) started in the early 70s.”  Omari was only five years old the first time he performed  on stage with his father at a concert in Italy. Thus, in many  ways he has come full circle and is now able to forge ahead on his musical journey. He currently performs four to six times a week around his native land with his band, Eleven, or in simpler acoustic sets.

Like most of the album, Omari wrote both the lyrics and  the music on the title track, which was produced by Stanley Stevens. Renowned musicians Junior Jazz, Glen Bowne,  Robbie Lyn and Sly Dunbar accompany Omari on this autobiographical song about his transition from cricket to music.

 

Locally, the soft release of the single, Move On, garnered  airplay on all of Anguilla’s radio stations including 92.9  Klass FM, 95.5 FM Radio Anguilla, 97.7 FM Up Beat Radio  and 103.3 Kool FM. On February 22, 2013, Omari Banks returns to the Caribbean’s largest privately owned music festival, Moon Splash to perform songs from his debut album.

Omari Banks is a man with a message and the desire to succeed; his brilliant cricket career is a testament to Omari’s  drive and determination, but his musical journey has only  just begun.

 

“I want to take my music to an international market because  I have an opinion based on knowledge and information. I  want to use the gifts I’ve been blessed with to have a positive influence on people. Being someone who has already  travelled the world with sports, I’m able to have a broader  perspective than a lot of other people. I can communicate to  all levels of thinking from a child to an adult and my music  is ageless and really touches lives because the stories are  true and talk about what’s really going on.” Such tracks  include Still The Youth, Oh Africa and Jehovah’s Message.

 

His music is food for the soul. His narrative ballads tell  stories about society and relationships that convey lessons  learned while others, filled with inspiration and hope, support his musical recipe where love is always the key ingredient.

“It’s message music and I speak through the song” explains  Omari, “once I’ve decided on the concept (something I’m  passionate about), I go within myself to paint the best picture about what I’m really feeling…the music also has to fit  the concept of the song. The chords need to convey the right  attitude to evoke the right meaning. I’m very honest, very  genuine and very personal, and I think that’s what people  connect to because I say things that people are afraid to say.  I’m not afraid to say how I’m truly feeling and I put my  emotions out there.”

Although he dabbles with bass occasionally, Omari’s instrument of choice is the guitar and unlike his contemporaries, Omari plays, sings, and writes his own songs. He also writes, arranges and produces the music that is filled  with rich horns, snare drums, heavy bass and electric guitar chords and melodies, that bring Omari’s words to life, setting Omari Banks apart from most contemporary Reggae  artists. In his own words, “the world needs messages of  hope and love that can cross race and religion.”

Anguilla to host Hair Show and Expo - “A Hair Affair”

UNBEWEAVEABLE DIVAS to host “A Hair Affair” a two day annual hair & beauty expo and educational trade show that supports the efforts of cosmetologist and barbers across the Caribbean scheduled for June 6th- 8th 2013 in Anguilla.

The “Hair Show and Expo” will be hosted celebrity Angela Simmons. The event will begin Thursday June 6th and ends Sunday June 9th

Miss Anguilla 2011 - 2012, is Olufunmike Banks-Devonish

Olufunmike Banks-Devonish is the newly crowned Miss Anguilla 2011 - 2012, which was held  Landsome Bowl last Thursday August 6.  The 21 year old will represent her country in Miss Carival 2012 and other Caribbean Beauty Pageants next year during her reign

Olufunmike who is a Psychology student at Trent University in Canada, also won  the interview,  costume and the evening wear segments , Miss Congeniality and tied with first runner up was Marejah Smith for best talent. Along with the title Olufunmik also received EC $8,000.

Marejah won the introductory speech and walked away with EC $4,000 in cash. Second runner up, Shara Hodge, was Miss Photogenic and received  EC $2,000.

Olufunmike who plans to pursue a Masters in Clinical Psychology, enjoys dancing, singing, acting, debating, travelling and music.  She is also an International Ambassador for the University and was recently elected President of the Trent African Caribbean Student Union.

Marejah Smith, is studying law at the University of Derby in the UK, while Shara Hodge is an employee at Scotiabank.

LIME “Rihanna LOUD in Barbados" Concert Winners Chosen

Yesterday LIME  announced the winners of its “Rihanna LOUD in Barbados” Concert, VIP tickets.   Rudy Webster of the Long Path, in Anguilla was the winner, where  he will be provided with 2 VIP tickets  to the concert, airfare to and from Barbados, all-inclusive hotel accommodation and ground transportation to and from the airport and the concert.

LIME launched the competition via Facebook for fans  to 'like' or 'follow' the company online and complete a virtual scavenger hunt including videos.

At a press conference Rudy said “I am a great fan of Rihanna’s and I really want to thank LIME for giving me this once in a life time opportunity. I am really excited!”

Rudy will be leaving for today on LIAT, along with his  cousin Damien Harrigan, whom Rudy decided to share the VIP tickets with.

Sarah Hodge, a Customer Service Representative, also won V.I.P. tickets, air transport and accommodation as part of the LIME staff promotion  will also be joining Rudy and Damien.

According to LIME General Manager Mark Romney, “LIME is very proud to be able to offer customers and staff the opportunity to be a part of Rihanna’s Caribbean concert. This is definitely the event of the year and I wish that I could attend! I am a big Rihanna fan myself”.

 The concert will be held at the Kensington Oval on Friday 5 August 2011.

Shellya Rogers takes 2010 Miss Anguilla title

THE VALLEY, Anguilla – IT was tit for tat last night (Aug. 5) between two contestants at the Miss Anguilla Pageant held at Landsome Bowl, as Shellya Rogers and Deidra Bell took all of the segments but Rogers outshone Bell by taking the crown.

Rogers also took the awards for Best Introductory Speech, Best Talent, Best Interview and Miss Popularity while Bell, who was named First Runner-up, was awarded the prizes for Miss Photogenic, Best Swimsuit, Best Costume and Best Evening Wear.

The other contestants were Vanessa Edwards and Cindy Isaacs.

Along with a trophy and crown, Rogers won herself EC$8 000, a Dell Notebook Computer, LIME phone package, gift bags and a salon gift certificate, while the First Runner-up received EC$4 000, a Dell Notebook Computer, a Trophy and also a LIME package.

The Anguilla Carnival continues today with the Parade of Troupes through the streets of The Valley.
