Traditionally,
going to church on Easter Sunday, was the norm. Caribbean parents are spiritual
even if they are not born again Christians. I remember dressing up in in
my black-and-white dress with two ribbons attached to my hair that was the pinnacle
of my Easter.
Another Tradition
was going the beach, once considered bad luck to go Good Friday. The sea allegedly claims a sacrifice on Good Friday.
Others say if you step into the ocean on Good Friday, you'll turn into a fish...
When I was younger
“kite-flying” was
another tradition. I never knew there was a symbolic meaning to that, until I
became an adult. The flying of kites is a
symbolic of Jesus' resurrection from the grave and His eventual ascension into
Heaven. Some Islands hold kite-flying competitions during Easter.
My most favourite time was the food, Bun and cheese and
fish. Fish is traditionally served, because of the Lenten
season as a substitute for red meat.
In some part of
the Caribbean “breaking eggs” on Holy Thursday at midday and placing it “holy
water” until Good Friday can tell the future based on the shape of coagulated egg
white. For
example, if the shape resembles a boat, means you will be travelling... As kids we so believe in that superstition.
For the teenagers
and more mature folks, Easter is the season
for Carnival celebrations filled with partying and revelry.
