About Your Big Year Competition
Smaller Earth is honoured to coordinate
and host Your Big Year,
which is a major proponent of our 2020 vision to positively impact 20 million
people by 2020.
Your Big Year
is a global competition that helps to answer the question “What is global
citizenship and why is it important to us?”
It is the opportunity of a lifetime with
the chance to travel across five continents over one year, to participate in
meaningful service projects, and to engage community & world leaders. The
competition is a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week as it links the
entrepreneurial spirit to global citizenship.
In 2010, 44 489 individuals from 168
countries entered this unique Smaller Earth led competition. The top 24 were
brought to Liverpool as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. After a thorough
week of tasks and probing interviews, two winners emerged. 24 year-old
Michael Teoh
and 26 year-old Carielle Doe then took up the life-changing task of their
lives, visiting 22 completely different countries and cultures, meeting world
leaders, innovators, and inspirational entrepreneurs; all in a bid to seek out
the truth about social, economic and political injustice on our planet. An
archive of reports from their trip can be found at here
Over 60 000 people entered from 221
countries for the 2011/12 competition. 16 individuals from 14 different
countries were flown to Liverpool for the finals which reached its climax
on March 16th at the 2012 Global
Entrepreneurship Congress. They competed in a series of challenges to
determine who would be the Smaller Earth Ambassador for 2012/13. The
winner was 24 year-old Ugandan Charles Batte, who impressed the judges with a
real will to make a difference coupled with first-class oratory skills. Charles
began his ambassadorial trip in June 2012 and you can follow his progress
around the world ...here
