He then started to use scrap fabric to
create his own unique style named “RUFF” he was indeed a trend
setter after he attend San Juan Comprehensive School at age 14. He was
fortunate to enroll in a tailoring class and had the privilege to be taught by
five different teachers due to the turnover in staff. He felt that was great
for him because he learnt five unique styles of tailoring.
Despite the odds of the school’s urban
environment, Marlon
down to earth personality afforded him to be likeable to many and he was often
referred to as “Daww” short
for Dawayne
which is his middle name. This sparked the new name of his clothing line and it
was the acronym for “dangerous attitude when wearing”.
The clothing he produced then, were made of denim, had a military look to it
and more were more urban styles.
Marlon
was hungry to learn more and tried on more than one occasion to enroll in a
very popular trade school in Trinidad. His many attempts failed him. However,
he had an alternative plan. Marlon then
worked for Regency Manufacturers, where he started off as a floor
staff, two days subsequently, he was then moved to another department to assist
the designer due to his detailed and immaculate work. In three months’ time Marlon
was offered the position as the designer he assisted who had left the factory.
His load of work became overwhelming the factory depended on his supervisory
attention to floor staff as well but Marlon openly admitted he was happy to
know that business inside out.
The factory ended up foreclosing after
three years working with them and Marlon
landed another great opportunity to work for a top designer he calls his mentor
in the Caribbean known as Mill House. At this point Marlon
got off his seat in front of me with excitement as he began to speak about his
experience working for Mr. Gregory Mills.
He admires Mr. Mills immensely and is very grateful for all that he was taught
whilst working for him.
The time came to Marlon’s business
to gain independence. This movement was very beneficial he worked on large
productions: dance and drama theaters, carnival bands for names like Marcia Charles, Brian Mc Farlene and
the Creative Arts Center. His brother Marvin
George and good friend Peggy-Ann
Simons played an instrumental role in his life for years and still does.
Like a true business man Marlon analyzed
his target audience and refreshed the meaning of “DAWW”
which now means “Distinguish Attitude When Wearing”.
The clothing line has a more chic, historic European appeal to them. In 2012
and 2013 DAWW
Creations appeared in the designer’s
lineup for Tobago Fashion Week. Currently he is preparing DAWW Creations for
San Fernando Fashion Week in June 2013 in Trinidad.
Marlon
is furthering his education by pursuing
a diploma at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. His inspired line with the
involvement of Ms. Peggy-Ann is
called Aggrandizement he wanted to explain that in the European historic times
aggrandizing was used to conquer different colonies. Guess what? DAWW Creations
2013 concept objective is to take over fashion. DAWW Creations
are a unisex brand. Marlon’s only challenge is souring unique fabrics, in order
to overcome that challenge he has developed a shopping technique.
At this level of his achievements he
puts God first and he also reflects on how his ancestors and father did not
leave a foundation to pass onto him or his siblings. Marlon
intention is to leave his legacy for his four children. After he attended the
school of his second last boy child, he humbly spoke of how in the class, each
child had to get up and say their name, age and what they want to be when they
grow up. When it was time to for him to say what he wanted to be in the future,
Mr. George left his modest disposition for two seconds and proudly quoted his
son’s exact words “I want to be the C.E.O of DAWW Creations”. The joy Marlon
felt deep down was indescribable and he plans to be consistent with his gift.
The best advice he would like to share
with aspiring entrepreneurs; is to always put God first, whatever your goals
are, go after them, God will open doors for you.
