Jamaican-American Yanique Richards honored with Carol Jenkins Young Journalist Award

A Jamaican-American  Yanique Richards a student at Howard University, was the recent recipient of the first ever Carol Jenkins Young Journalist Award at the prestigious Women’s Media Awards produced by the Women’s Media Center.

Yanique, who is 19 years old is the grand-daughter of veteran roots reggae star, Ras Michael.  She is currently a journalism major and political science minor at Howard University Washington DC.

The Young Journalist Award  is in honour  of  Carol Jenkins,who is an author , producer, and an Emmy award winning former television anchor and correspondent. She is also immediate past president of the Women’s Media Center which works to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media.
The ceremony was held at Tribeca 360 in New York City. with the theme  “A Celebration of Powerful & Visible Women in Media,” , where there were other outstanding recipients, such as Soledad O’Brien, CNN Anchor and Special Correspondent,
who was awarded the Broadcast Journalism Award

Maggie Wilderotter, Chairman and CEO of Frontier Communications, was the Business Media Award Recipient; Sady Doyle, Founder of blogsite TigerBeatdown.com, who won the Social Media Award.  Also  Lara Logan, CBS News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent & 60 Minutes Correspondent, Whole Truth Award Recipient, honored for her courageous reporting about her attack in Tahrir Square, that has broken the code of silence surrounding sexual assaults on female journalists.
