When it comes to the way people express themselves through the way they dress its often a debate about what is acceptable and what is not. The issue of the bra straps showing when a female is dressed is one the common topics often debated, is it a tacky idea that has become acceptable or is the case where no one bothers to complain?
According to Renee, a student of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus Jamaica “the bra straps showing is no doubt tacky however if it is a fancy bra, worn in a party setting it might be acceptable or even look cute”. Another female expressed that it’s one of those things that one turns a blind eye to, as everyone is fully aware that females wear bras; there should be no problem if it is showing, but believe it or not we do notice and form our opinions. A young man close by the discussion was of the opinion that its deportment that he stands for and the exposure of bra straps when a female is dressed is tacky and unlady-like.
If the way we dress as individuals define us as a person, is this the way we want to portray ourselves? Where our undergarments are the first thing you see upon greeting or meeting us for the first time. In a world where appearance and approach is everything do you want to come across as unprepared, indecent and unorganized (relatively speaking)? Growing up we learn the uses of some stuff through their name for example the coffee maker , beach hats and yes ,the underwear! Suggested by its name it was meant to be worn under your garment and not for public display. However some people protest this fact. They are in the opinion that why would bras have such fancy designs if they were meant to be hidden, but is wearing a fashionable bra an excuse to advertise it? Regardless of the colour brand or design of a bra it is still an undergarment and should be worn under ones clothing and is not suitable for public appearances.
With the changing world of fashion, our tops and dresses change forms, textures and shapes every day; but nonetheless they cater the deportment of the female body. There are several types of bras, which ranges from the wonder bra to the sports bra and pertinent to the current topic the strapless or half top bra. Thais bra was designed to provide adequate bra support in a situation where bra straps are not appropriate for the outfit. So, is there a need for any female to be wearing a bra with the straps under a spaghetti strapped top?
Although cognizant to the fact that most women dress based on the mentality of being safe than sorry in terms of comfort and security when wearing a bra, what happened to our social values where decency is concerned and what examples are we creating for the younger generation?
