“History in the making, Grin is on the beat,” local hip-hop star Tay Grin raps on the remix of Jamaica’s R&B duo Brick and Lace track.

‘Back to Di Bone’ is the duo’s 2009 single whose remix features the rapper.

“This is the track promoting my new album after we talked of a possible collaboration last year,” he said.

The ‘Nyau Music’ star met the duo at the Big Brother III finale in Johannesburg, South Africa and talked of a possible collaboration.

“I engaged their management and discussed a number of issues which included collaborating with Brick & Lace.

“As an artist, I truly feel privileged and I am very excited that finally we have collaborated,” Tay Grin said in an interview on Sunday.

Brick & Lace (Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne) are sisters who are well-known for their song ‘Love is Wicked,’ the title track of their first album.

Signed by Kon Live Records, Brick & Lace will be the first group to be released on Akon’s label.

The duo has worked with well-known artists in Jamaica and USA including hip-hop artist Obie Trice on the rapper’s track ‘Jamaican Girl’ in 2006.

Tay Grin met the country’s leading DJs in Blantyre on Sunday where they discussed several issues.

“I feel DJs have a role to play in identifying and promoting local talent,” he said.

He also revealed the establishment of Black Rhyno Entertainment that aims at promoting local talent.

“Our goal is to work closely with the DJs and the media to create a machine to act as platform for the Malawian music artists to be heard around the world.

“We would like to raise the quality of Malawian music by filtering what’s good and what’s bad and creating a competitive edge for artists to strive for excellence,” said Tay Grin who has linked up with producer Maj Beats.

Maj Beats, a Malawian producer, spent the past 13 years in the United States where he produced songs for well known artists including Bone Thugs ‘n’ Harmony member Bizzy Bone.

Some DJs, who pointed out that it was difficult to market urban music in Malawi since the early 90s, wanted to know the new company’s approach.

“We will use the existing connections to reveal the best talent in Malawi and open the avenues to international market,” said Tay Grin whose two songs feature regularly on MTV Base and Channel O.

Taps Bandawe, The Real Elements, Boyz (Bubu) Lazy and Criminal A are some of the artists who are credited for pioneering the local hip-hop movement in the late 80s and early 90s.

Maj Beats said the local DJs can determine the success of local music industry.

“There is no way we can talk of success without putting the DJs in the equation because they are most constructive critics around.

“We want to create an environment that will benefit the entertainment industry in Malawi,” he said.

Maj Beats cited DJ Clue and Funkmaster Flex as two of the DJs who have contributed a lot to music in the USA.

Black Rhyno Entertainment takes its name from the black rhinoceros which cannot be stopped when it charges.

The recording company specialises in hip-hop, pop and world music, fused with traditional ethnic music, primarily Africa music.

Tay Grin, real name Limbani Kalilani, is the CEO/President of the new company while Maj Beatz, who is a producer, songwriter, musician, sound engineer and video director, is the vice president of Black Rhyno Entertainment.

The company’s upcoming projects include Tay Grin’s second album, Unity Africa Project and a compilation album to feature Malawi’s hottest artists.

The new company will soon organise a workshop for all artists in Malawi to help understand the business of music.
