Behind the scenes, breathing life into some noteworthy music video, is the talented producing trio of Scorpio 21.
Rachelle Mayers and Renais Marshall, two television producers from HYPE TV, founded the company in September 2007. The two soon joined forces with fellow television producer and third partner, Janelle Dyer, to begin their journey in the entertainment industry.
Concept of the group
"The idea for Scorpio 21 really came from the need for extra money. We were doing the nine to five but that was only paying the bills so we combined what we had and, knowing that we were good in production and we were creative, we decided to do music videos," Marshall told The Gleaner.
With Mayers and Marshall sharing the same birthday, November 21, the name Scorpio 21 seemed a good fit, using their zodiac sign.
Focusing not only on TV and video production, the company also has its hands in event management, helping out at the recent 'Shaggy and Friends' concert on January 3at Jamaica House.
They admire music video directors such as Gary Cobern, JayWill and Ras Kassa, but Scorpio 21 sets itself apart by the new and exciting concepts it brings to video production.
So far, the trio has directed the Start Anew video for Tarrus Riley, which has topped local video charts, In My Life, for Terro 3000, Go Home, for Richie Stephens, All and All, for Hyah Slice and Ghetto Prayer, for Shane O, among others. Soon, Scorpio 21 will be lending their artistic visuals to Belly Wine, for singer Raine Seville, as well as Pop Champagne, for Anthony B.
Marshall also said they will soon be doing commercials, TV shows and, hopefully, one day, movies.
With training in production, art and drama, each member of the Scorpio trio has distinct duties. Marshall is the director, Mayers handles production and Dyer is the art director.
With so many music video directors, what makes Scorpio 21 different?
Creative ideas
"I think everyone in the business is creative but they generally think in kinda the same way where they think in terms of what the song is saying, unlike us, who think more abstractly," Marshall stated.
Mayers added: "We understand that it's a business and when it comes to the image of the artiste we ensure that we talk to the producer and artiste about what they want to portray for themselves. For example, when we did the video for Iceman, he didn't want to be seen as a comedian, so we tried to change that image in the video."
The future seems bright for Scorpio 21 with the trio planning to establish an office locally and expand to Barbados, where Mayers was born.
"We hope to one day be pre-paring a treatment for people like Diddy and to be heading up a total empire from public relations to event management," said Mayers.
