Interview with Plus-Size Model Sabrina Clinton

Writer : Caribbean E-Magazine on Saturday, November 23, 2013 | 7:36 PM

There are many reasons to admire Sabrina Clinton: The plus-size aspiring model, who resides in Brooklyn, New York. This Bajan beauty is helping to redefine the industry standards of beauty, as well as encouraging women of all sizes to embrace their natural shape too.

Since making her foray into the modelling world,
Sabrina has appeared in many fashion shows. Her modelling career started with the Unique Blend Models fashion shows , which  led up to Ashley Stewart in store fashion shows (in Harlem, Flatbush & Yonkers), Plus Gorjus Paparazzi fashion show and The Ms Full Figured USA 2013 Pageant & Fashion on the Hudson. She recently graced the cover of Fashion Avenue News Magazine.

Sabrina is now the Executive Coordinator for the modelling group Unique Blend Models in NYC & Philly and co-founder of Caribbean Gemz which is a newly founded West Indian organization spreading Caribbean culture throughout New York in various events.

CEM caught up with Sabrina for a one on one to talk about how she got her start, body diversity in the fashion industry, and why she takes no issue with being called plus-size.

How did you get started modeling?

I was attending a re-launch fashion show for Katwalk Katerers with a friend and Andrene Williams CEO of Unique Blend Models sent over her PR person Joann Young to invite me to their casting. Funny enough I was not dressed fancy nor did I have on makeup but she said I have the look and potential of a model. From there I attend the casting and I've been model ever since.

What kind of modeling do you mainly do? Do you feel like opportunities are expanding?

I mainly do couture plus size modeling. Yes I do. Since the start of Full Figured Fashion week along with many other plus size groups and events the plus size industry has grown a lot.  There are more plus size fashion shows worldwide, plus magazines and designers.

Who have you done work for? I saw you on the cover of Fashion Avenue News Magazine

Yes, I was both shocked and honoured to be on the cover of FANM. Sofia Davis is an amazing woman. I love that she's giving plus size women an opportunity to be featured in her magazine. So far I have done in-store fashion shows with Ashley Stewart and runway shows with designers such as Lonnie Cisco, Just Raymona, Eyani Couture & Rick Lamar.

Who would you love to work for, who you haven’t worked for yet?

I would love to work with Gwen Devoe in Full Figured Fashion Week and be a print model for Ashley Stewart. There are so many people I haven't worked with that I couldn't name all.

Have you ever been asked to gain or lose weight to get a job?

Lol...no I haven't, however I am working out to stay healthy and maintain a comfortable weight for me.

What is unique about being a plus-size model?

Being a plus size model shows the average woman that she is also beautiful with the curves she has. It also shows little girls and teenagers to be comfortable in our own skin.

You're very body confident. Do you have any tips for women who might not feel as comfortable in their own skin?

We are all made in different sizes and shapes; some have more than others so just embrace what you have. Everyone is beautiful no matter what.

Do you think there is still a way to go, before the industry sees healthier, fuller figures as beautiful?

Actually I think we are already there, which is truly amazing. Looking back on the past couple of years till now, the Plus Size industry has grown outstandingly and is as popular as straight models.

What are your thoughts on airbrushing and have you seen things that bother you?

To be honest a little or close to none is ok; however when it comes to overdoing it to where you don't look as you do in person is very deceiving. I have seen some work in which I had to take a second look and say that's not how she really looks.

How does it feel to be considered a role model?

I would say look in the mirror and find what is beautiful about you. Turn what you see as a flaw into something good and be confident in who you are. It feels great to know that women can look at me and say if she can do it so can I.

Who are your role models?

The late Mia Amber, she was such a kind spirited woman, Tyra Banks and Andrene Williams

What types of plus clothing would you like to see more of?

I would like to see more elegantly sexy clothes along with swimwear that looks appealing and flattering to our shapes and sizes.

What is your personal favourite style era/trend?

I don't have a favourite style but I am growing fond of the peplum style.

What are your future goals?

My goals are to be an Ashley Stewart model and known worldwide in the plus size industry.

Any words of wisdom for all our aspiring readers out there?

Be confident in yourself, as long as you put your mind to it you can do and be anything.
