Newly-released court documents reveal details of the drug case against Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton, including allegations that he attempted to buy cocaine from an undercover police officer.
As previously reported, the artist has been in U.S. federal custody in Miami since Thursday and faces a charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.
Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, joined with two others to contact a police informant last week about buying cocaine in Sarasota, according to court documents. Drug Enforcement Administration agents say Banton negotiated the purchase and was observed inspecting cocaine offered by the undercover cop.
The other men were arrested Thursday when they allegedly attempted to buy the drugs, the Associated Press reported.
