Usain Bolt's next goal? To make it on your shirt. Bolt wants to join the Lacoste crocodile and the Ralph Lauren jockey and polo horse as popular logos to grace the left breast of polo shirts.
The Olympic gold medallist made his fashion debut by launching the Usain Bolt Apparel Collection two Saturdays ago. The logo for the collection, one of three lines, is an outline of him doing his trademark 'To the World' pose. This line includes polo shirts, sexy women's yoga pants, baby tees and caps. The classic clean pieces are reminiscent of the Ralph Lauren polo in simplicity and branding. According to Sun Island Jamaica, manufacturers and distributors of the collection, quality is guaranteed. The polos are made of 100 per cent pique cotton.
Other lines
The other lines - the souvenir and urban - are more in your face. The souvenir items are celebratory of his success at the Olympics, in the national colours, with wording like 'Bolt, Green and Gold', along with his world-record times.
The urban line was "created based on Bolt's zeal for urban casual," explained Sheraine Pottinger, MC for the evening. These are mainly graphic T-shirts bearing Bolt's name with an edgy urban look, and in colours other than black, green and gold.
FUTURE HOPES
The launch was held at the offices of Sun Island Jamaica, 45 Molynes Road. The T-shirt and souvenir company hopes to export the items to Europe.
The athlete is also committed to giving back to his country. "Some of the proceeds will go to the United Way. We'll be trying to put fire extinguishers in basic and primary schools and, of course, we'll be starting with my parish first," Bolt said before presenting a cheque for $100,000 to the United Way of Jamaica.
