Cuban Film Pablo Wins Big at New York International Film Festival

Pablo, first feature film directed by Cuban Yosmani Acosta, won two prizes at the 2013 New York International Film Festival.
 
Acosta won the award in the Best Director category, while actor Omar Franco walked away with the prize in that of Best Supporting Actor, the film’s producer, Bobby Estany. This according to ACN

After its participation in the
New York festival, the film, nominated in another three categories -foreign film, main actors and original story- will be presented in other U.S. cities and in France.

The background music of the film,-the first one made in
Camaguey province (2011), as well as its theme, was in charge of the island’s Buena Fe duo.

The 33rd edition of the Caribbean Festival "Fire Fiesta" to be held in Cuba in July

The official announcement of the 33rd edition of the Caribbean Festival was made on Monday in this city in the presence of Culture Minister Rafael Bernal and renowned intellectuals of the island.


The Fire Fiesta Festival will be held from July 3rd to the 9th in eastern Santiago de Cuba province. On this occasion, it will be dedicated to the Colombian Caribbean, pointed out Orlando Verges, member of the organizing committee.

Verges, also director of the Caribbean Center, informed about the presence in the Festival of almost 150 people and 20 researchers from the guest country.

So far, 1,189 artists and intellectuals from 20 nations have confirmed their attendance to the meeting, among them Venezuela, Curacao, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Surinam and Colombia.



The organizing committee announced 52 places in the province where activities will take place for the enjoyment of the population, among them parks, theaters, avenues and other spaces.

The
Heredia Cultural Complex will host 29 cultural galas and 30 shows, as well as 35 fine arts exhibitions in galleries and other centers of this city.

The theoretical meeting The Caribbean that Unites Us proposes debates on the identities of the peoples, cultures of resistance, traditional knowledge, oral traditions, natural medicine and religion, all of them related to inhabitants in the area.

Cuban Film ¨Pablo¨ Receives Nominations in the New York Film Festival


¨Pablo¨, the first feature film directed by Yosmani Acosta Martinez is nominated in five categories in the next the New York International Film Festival.  
 

Details of this event were revealed in a communication sent to Camaguey by Acosta Martinez from the United States, where he traveled to attend several events related to the audiovisual productions.

This film is considered a public good campaign against domestic violence and it has been nominated in the categories of best foreign film, best director, best leading actor and actress, best supporting actor, and best original script.

Javier Diaz Varona, born in Camagüey and who was 12 years old when filming the movie, took most of the role of the leading character, Pablo, briefly played in childhood by his brother Jadiel (five years at that time ), in a film shot in 2011 in the capital of the province.

One of the few professional actors in the film, Omar Franco ,with remarkable scenic career was nominated in the category of Supporting Actor, for his performance of Rogelio, the father of Pablo, a victim of domestic abuse.

Yosmani Acosta, Joel Ortega and Luisa Alejo are the authors of the script, which is a denunciation to a scourge of universal impact.

Martinez Acosta's visit related to the presentation of the film in U.S. territory began in the Palm Beach International Film Festival, Florida. In addition to the scale of New York, the trip will include meetings in Tampa and Chicago, as well as commercial projections.

It is also scheduled the film to participate in a forum in Saint-Julien-en Born, to be held in June in France.

The first public screenings of the film took place last December in Havana, in an out of competition program at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.
